Muerta: New Dota 2 hero unveiled at TI11

At this year’s Grand Final of The International, Valve revealed Muerta, the next Dota 2 hero. Fans are always eager to hear more about new events and heroes that will appear in their favourite games. Primal Beast was the last hero to be added to Dota 2 in February 2022.

The trailer is less than a minute long and doesn’t showcase any gameplay, but it does offer us a good look at Muerta and goes over a bit of her character’s premise, which is that she travels beyond the afterlife.

Muerta stares at the camera at the end of the teaser and bursts, for want of a better word, covering her body with teal-painted skeleton patterns. Muerta draws obvious artistic inspiration from traditional Mexican Day of the Dead decorations – which, coincidentally, fall on Tuesday.

Valve made no mention of Muerta’s talents or stats. However, given on her weaponry – two bright pistols dangling from her belt – she appears to be an agility-focused ranged carry. Players won’t know for certain until Valve publishes Muerta in early 2023.

Defense of the Ancients 2 is the successor to the first Defense of the Ancients, which was a fan-made custom game mode in Warcraft III in 2002. The creators finally wanted to earn a livelihood off of their extremely successful game, and they wanted to be free of the limits imposed by Warcraft III’s unique game engine, so they were scooped up by Valve and launched Dota 2 in 2013, which immediately became one of the genre’s most popular titles.

To give you a sense of how popular the game is, The International 11, a recent Dota 2 tournament where Muerta was introduced, had a prize pool of more than $18 million USD, the vast bulk of which came from in-game Battle Pass purchases.

Prior to Muerta, the most recent hero to be added to Dota 2 was Primal Beast, who debuted on the lanes on February 23 of this year. With Muerta not coming out until next year, the gap between hero releases will be around a year. This isn’t unusual for Dota 2, which regularly spends nearly a year between new heroes.

Hoodwink, who didn’t debut until the middle of December, was the sole new hero in 2020. However, three new characters were introduced to the game in 2019, indicating that Valve appears to release heroes when they are ready.

As Muerta is expected to arrive in early 2023, and given that this year’s Battle Pass will run until early next year, with Part 2 due to begin now that TI 11 has concluded, Dota 2 fans are in for a treat in the coming months.
