Vijender Singh set for August return at first pro boxing event in Raipur

Vijender Singh, one of the most successful Indian boxers on international turfs, is all set to make a comeback in the boxing ring at the ‘Rumble in the Jungle event. The event is going to be held at Raipur in August’22.

The pro boxing tournament is being organised under the auspices of the Chhattisgarh Government in State’s capital Raipur. The event will be his sixth professional bout in his home country. He has a track record of 12 to 1 with eight knockouts post-turning boxing professional in 2015.

The boxer who turned 36th this year is a professional boxer. Among his achievements, Vijender Singh has won a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics 2008, bronze medals at Commonwealth Games 2010, World Championship 2009, and silver medals in 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games. In 2015, he signed a multi-year agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment.

In a media brief, Vijender Singh termed the event as a great opportunity for the State and budding boxing professionals. In his words, “the boxing event is a great opportunity to introduce the sport to the people of the state, and hopefully, this can inspire a new generation of aspiring boxers.”He further said, “I am currently practising in Manchester and look forward to continuing my unbeaten streak again this August.”

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel jubilant to host the tournament said, “The State of Chhattisgarh is dedicated to promoting young talent and developing a breed of talented sportspersons for the current and future sporting events.”He continued, “We are proud to have Mr Vijender Singh, an Indian professional boxer with international stature, for the event. His presence will inspire young athletes who want to make a mark in the boxing arena.”

The ‘Rumble in the Jungle” will be held at Balbir Singh Juneja Indoor Stadium. The tournament will witness various boxing clashes along with Vijender Singh’s bout in the ring. The Stadium has a seating capacity of four thousand and is situated at the central point, easily accessible from different parts of Raipur.
