Eoin Morgan set to announce international retirement
On Tuesday, England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan is widely anticipated to make the announcement that he would be retiring from international competition.
Morgan, who is 35 years old and has struggled with form and fitness over the past 18 months, has decided against leading England in the Twenty20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia later this year. Morgan’s original intention was to lead England at the tournament.
This month, he led a one-day series in the Netherlands, but his dual troubles were revealed when he was dismissed twice for nought in high-scoring contests. He then missed the concluding game with a groin strain, thus he did not play in the final game of the series.
In a press conference that will take place on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. and be broadcast live on Sky Sports News, Morgan will announce his intention to end his career playing international cricket.
Jos Buttler is now serving as England’s vice-captain and has acted as captain in Morgan’s absence when it was necessary. Buttler’s first assignment may be a high-profile series against India, which would begin on July 7 and include three Twenty20 internationals and three One-Day Internationals. This would be followed by the same schedule against South Africa.
“He has been short of form, short of fitness and there are other people now – there are so many white-ball batters who could be playing,” Sky Sports’ Nasser Hussain said. “It’s not the 10 he is taking on the field with him, it’s in the one he’s leaving behind because he’s in that spot, and Morgan will always think of that one.”He has been our greatest ever white-ball captain. He’s a World Cup-winning captain and he is a superb player.
Morgan led England to success in the 50-over World Cup, as well as the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup and the semi-finals of the 2021 edition of the tournament, both of which he captained. In addition, Morgan led England to glory in the 50-over World Cup.
