Bangladesh on the defensive after being all out for 227 on Day 1 of test versus India

India concluded the first day of the second and final Test match in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium with the advantage, having scored 19 runs without suffering a loss after knocking Bangladesh out for 227 runs in their opening innings.

Shakib al Hasan, captain of Bangladesh, won the toss and decided to bat on a cloudy morning in the city. India, who won the first Test by 188 runs, were again led by KL Rahul in lieu of the injured Rohit Sharma.

Bangladesh, who elected to bat, were led by Mominul Haque’s 84 runs off 157 deliveries. India bowled out Bangladesh in 73.5 overs, with Umesh Yadav (4/25) and Ravichandran Ashwin (4/71) combining for eight wickets, and Jaydev Unadkat (2/50) picking up the final two.

Umesh (4/25 in 15 overs) led the Indian fast bowlers well while Bangladesh was batting. Ashwin (4/71 in 21.5 overs) was closing in on 450 career wickets (447 at the moment) on a day when Jaydev Unadkat’s (2/50 in 16 overs) return to Test cricket after 12 long years caused a lot of debate about some of the team management’s choices.

At the toss, captain Rahul said that the pitch was hard to understand, so they chose Unadkat as an extra seam bowler. The main reason the decision didn’t go wrong was because Bangladesh’s batting line-up wasn’t very good. Mominul Haque, the former captain, was the only batter who stuck with it for more than four hours (84, 157 balls), but he didn’t get much help from the other end.

Bangladesh made two changes. Taskin Ahmed, a fast bowler, replaced Ebadat Hossain, who was hurt, and Yasir Ali was replaced by the more experienced Mominul Haque.

Bangladesh’s first two batters, Zakir Hasan and Nazmul Hossain Shanto, got off to a good start in the first hour of the game. Together, they scored 39 runs. In the 15th and 16th over, however, both of Bangladesh’s openers were dismissed in a span of only three balls. Unadkat took his first Test wicket in the second match of his career, 12 years after making his debut.

Mominul seemed strong from the beginning of his innings, as he and Shakib forged a productive combination to remain undefeated till lunch.

But shortly after lunch, a poor shot from captain Shakib resulted in his departure, when he was caught attempting to clear mid-off against pacer Umesh Yadav on the very first delivery.

It was a dangerous and negligent shot by the Bangladesh captain, as it handed the opponents the advantage immediately following the lunch break.

In response, India’s openers KL Rahul (3) and Shubhman Gill (14) scored 19 runs without losing a wicket, despite a few close calls, as the Indian squad made a good start to the pivotal Mirpur Test.
