Match Preview: Everton FC vs Brentford FC

Frank Lampard was fired in late January after only three victories in his first 20 Premier League games.

Replacement Sean Dyche made an immediate effect with two victories against Arsenal and Leeds United in his first three games in charge, but Everton have dropped back into the relegation zone with just one point from their previous three games.

Most of the blame for Everton’s current condition has been put at those in authority off the field, rather than on it.

The Toffees have struggled for goals this season, with their total of 19 being the lowest in the Premier League.

The injury problems of Dominic Calvert-Lewin haven’t helped matters, but the sales of Richarlison and Anthony Gordon have particularly irritated the blue half of Merseyside.

Demarai Gray is Everton’s highest scorer this season, with four league goals, however Dwight McNeil is the only other player currently at the club with multiple league goals.

Calvert-Lewin is not the only significant Everton player who has been injured for much of the season; Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey, and Mason Holgate have all missed the majority of the pre-World Cup friendlies.

Former Bees James Tarkowski and Conor Coady have established themselves at the heart of an Everton defence that has surrendered just three goals more than Manchester United and two more than Tottenham Hotspur.

Sean Dyche believes he has complete faith in his squad’s abilities and has seen strong signs of development in the early stages of his time as Everton manager ahead of Saturday’s visit from Brentford.

Thomas Frank’s in-form team travel to Goodison Park on Saturday (3pm GMT) hoping to extend their Premier League undefeated record to 12 games.

Meanwhile, the Blues enter the game aiming to gain momentum after a good performance and a draw away at Nottingham Forest last weekend – and having won two of the first three home games since Dyche took over in late January.

Dyche feels the Toffees are now “starting to appear more successful in different ways” as a result of his players’ commitment and application throughout that period.

Dyche said this week that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has returned to training with the squad, Vitalii Mykolenko has also rejoined the group after sickness, and Nathan Patterson has been working on his conditioning following another appearance for the Under-21s.

Demarai Gray had his debut start under Dyche against Nottingham Forest, and he excelled with a busy performance in attack, scoring the first goal from the penalty spot.

When it comes to the challenge that Brentford will present this Saturday, Dyche feels the west London club has a “good mix” of different threats.
