Asia Cup 2023: Rain washes out India vs Pakistan match

At the Pallakele Stadium in Sri Lanka on Saturday, rain washed out the exciting Pakistan-India Asia Cup 2023 encounter, leaving Pakistan waiting for their opportunity to bat. Rain forced the India-Pakistan Asia Cup group stage match to be called off in Pallekele on Saturday with the second innings yet to be completed.

Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf wrecked havoc in the early going, but Ishan Kishan (82) and Hardik Pandya (87) helped India get to 266. With a 4 wickets, Afridi was Pakistan’s best bowler, while Rauf and Naseem Shah both took three wickets, marking the first time ever that pacers took all 10 wickets in an Asia Cup match. Earlier, India skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bat first after winning the toss for his team’s opening match of the competition.

The game was officially declared ended at 9.52 p.m., 35 minutes before the deadline for a 20-over chase, due to a continuous drizzle that began towards the close of India’s batting effort. Tarpaulin sheets had already been placed over the whole outfield by that point.

After the coin landed in his favour, India captain Rohit Sharma made no second thoughts about choosing to bat, but it didn’t turn out to be a great start. After 4.2 overs and a 35-minute rain delay, Shaheen Shah Afridi quickly got Rohit going with an inswinger that snuck past his defence after a few outswingers. After a beautiful square drive, Virat Kohli played Afridi, giving him the double pleasure. India was in danger of crumbling under the pressure of the important match when Shreyas Iyer pulled Haris Rauf only to have Mohammad Nawaz cling on to a fine catch at midwicket, at 48 for three.

Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill were aiming to put up a solid innings while being cautious, but Shubman Gill was removed by Haris Rauf’s second wicket-taking blow. Ishan Kishan extended his arms, and Hardik Pandya arrived calmly. The two players are moving the game along and playing well together. Ishan Kishan’s dismissal by Haris Rauf was the turning point, and Shaheen Afridi then removed Hardik Pandya.  Soon after, Shardul and Ravindra Jadeja, the next two players, returned to the pavilion. Jasprit Bumrah made several excellent smashes to raise the Indian innings’ total to a manageable 266.

Since then rains showered on the venue. The umpires eventually determined that it was unnecessary to continue waiting, and the captains shook hands. As a result, Pakistan’s innings was declared over without a single ball being bowled in the game.

As a result, India will need to defeat Nepal on Monday in order to join Pakistan as the second side to qualify for the Super Four.
