Racist fan arrested during India vs. England test at Edgbaston

After allegations of racist behaviour were made during England’s test match against India at Edgbaston, the Birmingham Police Department said that a fan has been held for what they are calling a “racially aggravated public order felony.”

On the fourth day of the Test,  a number of Indian supporters alleged that they had been the target of racist slurs from other spectators at the Birmingham venue. England won the test by seven wickets to tie the series at 2-2.

According to a statement released by Birmingham Police, “a 32-year-old male has been detained for a racially aggravated public order offence after accusations of racist, abusive behaviour at the test match in Birmingham on Monday.”

“He remains in custody for questioning.”

“We are in communication with Edgbaston officials to have a better understanding of what took place, and we would want to encourage anyone who witnessed or heard any racist language or gestures, or who has video material that might be of assistance, to get in touch with us.

“We’re aware of images circulating on social media showing an alleged offender. We’re making inquiries to identify the person and would urge him to come forward and speak to us.

A spokesperson stated that “We have opened a criminal inquiry into reports of racial and abusive behaviour at the Test match in Birmingham.”

“Nearly 100,000 people watched one of the most exciting Test matches in recent history… but we cannot hide from the mindless racist abuse experienced by some fans following India in the Eric Hollies Stand,” Warwickshire chief executive Stuart Cain said in a statement.

“These unacceptable actions by a small number of people have overshadowed a superb sporting contest, and those responsible do not deserve to be part of the cricket family.”

England test captain Ben Stokes said he was disappointed about the abuse.

“Amazing week on the pitch but really disappointed to hear reports of racist abuse at Edgbaston. Absolutely no place for it in the game,” Stokes said on Twitter. “Hope all the fans at the white-ball series have a brilliant time and create a party atmosphere. That’s what cricket’s about!!”

In addition to employing “undercover football crowd-style spotters”, there will be an enhanced police presence at Edgbaston for the game on Saturday.
