Glamorgan’s Sam Northeast smashes 400 runs
After reaching 410 not out for Glamorgan in an English County Championship match on Saturday, Sam Northeast joined an elite club of cricketers who have scored 400 runs in a single innings.
Northeast’s innings the ninth-highest first-class total in history in a massive team total of 795-5 declared, is just the 11th 400-plus individual score in first-class cricket history, and the highest of the twenty-first century.
In total he faced 450 balls, hitting 45 fours and three sixes, with his team declaring at the lunch interval in Leicester. Due to Glamorgan’s decision to declare on 795-5 against Leicestershire, he was unable to surpass Brian Lara’s 1994 world record individual score of 501, which he achieved while playing for Warwickshire in an English county match.
“It’s truly special to be part of the list of names (for highest first-class scores), you never thought it would have happened this week, it’s crazy and I’m truly grateful for everything which has happened today,” Northeast told BBC Wales.
After Lara, Archie MacLaren (424) in 1895, and Graeme Hick (405) in 1988, Northeast’s hit was the fourth 400-plus score in the English county game.
“That finish was incredible, to get the team win topped off a wonderful day for me, the lads put in some tough yards and it’s a really memorable” Northeast said.
Leicestershire 584 (Wiaan Mulder 156; Andrew Salter 4-158) & 183 (Wiaan Mulder 59; Michael Hogan 4-43) lost by an innings and 28 runs against Glamorgan 795/5d (Sam Northeast 410*; Chris Wright 3-99).
