UFC 279: “I didn’t call for it, and I don’t want it”- Nate Diaz on fight with Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz may not have the strongest card overall, but given the headliner, it’s predicted to be one of the greatest events of 2022.

nate diazThe fact that Diaz is entering the last fight of his UFC contract, with the assumption that he would leave the Octagon for good, has further contributed to the melodrama of the fight card, which lacks any form of championship contest but is a supremely engrossing fight.

“What they’ve got me doing right now is they’re acting like I called for this fight, which I didn’t call for, and I don’t want, and didn’t want, and still don’t want,” Diaz told reporters. “But I don’t give a f—k, I’ll fight anybody. But the pressure’s on him — he better finish me, because he’s the next killer in town. Because … if I whoop his ass, they’re going to say, ‘Oh, he wasn’t the best in town,’” he continued. “But they’re not going to let me go. I asked for 20 fights, 10 fights, 15 fights.”

“All moments in UFC are big moments for me,” Chimaev stated. “It feels amazing I’m fighting Nate Diaz. One of the guys who has been like 15 years in the UFC. One of the legends. Maybe it’s his last fight. Who knows. I’m happy.”

Chimaev stated that there will be no appreciating the occasion or holding back when it comes to being confined inside the cage. He wants to keep growing and proving that he can shine on the largest platforms.

It matches a youthful lion, Khamzat Chimaev, against an aged fighter in the form of Nate Diaz, as have many famous battles in the past. Will the young gun triumph, as most people predict or will Diaz pull off one of the biggest surprises of his career, surprising the world as he did when he beat McGregor in 2016.

“This fight isn’t even about this guy,” Diaz remarked about the fight, “it’s about ‘making’ this guy. And I’m like, ‘Okay, you guys aren’t going to let me go? Because I’m the best fighter here? And you’re not gonna let me go unless it’s off of somebody? I gotta make somebody for you? Well, alright, you’re welcome. Let’s make you.’ You’re welcome, UFC. You’re welcome, Dubai. You’re welcome all you fools in your country. You’re welcome.”

I’m on Dana White’s side too,” Diaz explained. “It’s all love. I understand business, so it’s all good with me. Me and Dana always got along about everything too. And I’m not inking Real Fighting because I’m against anybody. I’m not going anywhere or doing anything. I have no plan for what my next move is. If something happens in this fight, I might just have to re-sign to get a rematch. If I don’t whip Khamzat’s ass right now, then c’mon.”

“Regardless of what happens, though—and say I leave, or do whatever—the best fighters are in the UFC and have been for a long time and will be for a long time, I’m sure. Doesn’t mean the realest sh-t is happening in the UFC. But, no matter what I do, I’m gonna be in the UFC,” Nate added.

Diaz’s fight against Chimaev will be his first since a unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards in June 2021. Diaz has been one of the biggest stars in the UFC since his surprise victory against Conor McGregor on short notice in March 2016. Chimaev’s rise to prominence has been possibly faster than fans have ever witnessed. In what will be Chimaev’s sixth bout, UFC 279 will be his first main event in the company.

Chimaev has already been heralded by many as a future welterweight champion, so Diaz is aware of the UFC’s objectives as he approaches free agency. He stated on Tuesday that he felt compelled to wage war against “the organisation and everybody.”

Given Chimaev’s formidable wrestling and ground-and-pound, as well as the fact that he is younger, more hungry, and has fought twice since Diaz’s previous bout we predict that Chimaev will annihilate Nate.
