FIFA confirms Bruno Fernandes scored first goal against Uruguay, Not Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo did not score against Uruguay on Monday, as evidenced by technology, according to FIFA.

Despite the fact that Portugal allegedly presented proof suggesting he had the final touch on Bruno Fernandes’ pass into the area after 54 minutes. To begin the scoring, Fernandes’ cross escaped the Uruguayan defence and goalie Sergio Rochet.

However, as the ball passed through, Ronaldo leaped up and seemed to try to head the ball in for his second goal of the tournament. Despite Ronaldo’s enthusiastic celebration, the stadium announcer at the Lusail Iconic Stadium named Fernandes as the scorer.

Despite being credited with the goal, Bruno Fernandes believed Cristiano Ronaldo scored Portugal’s opening in their 2-0 win against Uruguay on Monday. The Manchester United midfielder’s cross for Ronaldo floated in, but the experienced striker was inches away from making touch. Fernandes scored the second goal from the penalty spot late in the game after Uruguay was penalised for handball, and he was named man of the match. The victory ensured Portugal’s place in the round of 16 in Qatar.

Fernandes stated he wasn’t sure if Ronaldo had touched the ball, despite the fact that the superstar looked to be claiming it. He said he didn’t care who got the ultimate scoring credit.

“I celebrated [the goal] as if it had been Cristiano’s goal. It seemed to me that he had touched the ball. My aim was to cross the ball for him,” he said. “We are happy with the victory regardless of who scored. The most important thing is that we achieved our aim which is to be in the next round.”

Fernandes may be happy now that FIFA has verified their final decision, which was made using Adidas technology. Because the technology indicated that Ronaldo did not make contact with the ball, Fernandes was given credit for the goal.

“In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in adidas’s Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game,” a FIFA statement stated.

“No external force on the ball could be measured as shown by the lack of ‘heartbeat’ in our measurements. The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis,” it explained.

Adidas’ match ball incorporates technology that can supply match officials with real-time statistics. It may also capture every contact made by the players using sensors, which were added to assist in assessing offsides.

Instead of praising Fernandes, Portugal coach Fernando Santos decided to congratulate the entire squad.

“I think it’s the result of the team’s work,” said Santos. “If the team does not play well then the player himself will not have a good performance.

“I think in the first two games, the team has played well. Diogo Costa (the Portugal goalkeeper) saved two important shots, so I don’t think we should be focusing on individual players.”
