BCCI to form a Cricket Advisory Committee to undertake interviews for new selector panel
On Monday, the application period for the position of India’s senior men’s selection committee ended (November 28). Nayan Mongia, Maninder Singh, Shiv Sunder Das, Hemang Badani, and Ajay Ratra are among those who have applied for the position of India’s selector, according to sources. Before making a decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is expected to form a Cricket Advisory Committee to undertake interviews.
This marked the end of the Chetan Sharma-led selection panel, which had been constantly monitoring domestic contests like as the Vijay Hazare and the Cooch Behar Trophy.
Following India’s humiliating exits from the T20 World Cup 2022 and the 2022 Asia Cup, the BCCI fired the entire senior men’s selection committee panel, including head selector Chetan Sharma, on November 18 and promptly requested applications for national selectors. The Chetan Sharma-led panel will stay in place till new selections are announced.
Shiv Sunder Das is a batting coach for the Punjab cricket team. He formerly worked as a batting coach for the National Cricket Academy and the Indian Women’s side. Hemang Badani, who worked with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has yet to confirm or refute his candidacy for the position of selector.
Nayan Mongia, the most senior contender in the contest, has played 44 Tests and 140 ODIs for India. He has previously been on the selection committees for the Baroda team at both the senior and junior levels. Former cricketer Ajit Agarkar is another high-profile person who was linked to a job but chose not to apply.
However, the three incumbent members of the selection committee, including Chetan Sharma, are eligible to reapply for their positions. Sunil Joshi is not expected to run, while Sharma and Harvinder Singh have yet to confirm or refute their intentions to reapply.
Nayan Mongia is the only new candidate who has previously served on a selection committee at both the junior and senior levels.
The new selection panel’s first task will be to determine India’s squad for the white-ball series versus Sri Lanka at home in 2023. The selectors will need to make a number of crucial decisions with the ODI World Cup less than a year away.
The BCCI set a minimum qualifying level of seven Tests or 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches, for candidates while advertising for the new selection panel. They should also have retired “at least five years prior” and be under the age of 60. When formed, the committee will have five members, one from each zone.
