India squad update for New Zealand ODIs: Rajat Patidar replaces Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the next ODI series against New Zealand owing to a back ailment, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Iyer, who has recently failed to convert many excellent starts, will go to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for additional evaluation. The BCCI did not divulge the degree of the injury, and NCA testing will determine how long he will be out of play. Rajat Patidar has been appointed as his series substitute.

Iyer, who arrived at NCA on Monday, is expected to rejoin the India team in Nagpur for a training camp ahead of the first Test against Australia on February 9.
Iyer, India’s leading ODI run-scorer last year, was chosen over Suryakumar Yadav for the first two matches of the just finished ODI series against Sri Lanka. Iyer failed to score a huge run against Sri Lanka despite having several chances. In India’s 3-0 ODI series triumph against Sri Lanka, Iyer batted at No. 4 and scored 28, 28, and 38 runs. He is India’s second top ODI run-scorer since 2022, trailing only Shubman Gill, with 818 runs at an average of 51.12 and a strike rate of 92.95.

Patidar, his successor in the ODI team, has yet to make his international debut. Patidar, 29, was named to the team for the ODI series against Bangladesh in December but did not play. He has 1648 runs in 51 List A games, with a strike rate of 97.45 and an average of 34.33.
Patidar has been extremely impressive on the local circuit, and the Madhya Pradesh batsman has been a member of the team for the previous several series.
