The International 12 Dota 2 to be held in Seattle from October 27th

The International (TI), the world’s largest Dota 2 event, will be held in Seattle, USA, for the 12th time. Valve confirmed during the ESL One Berlin Major 2023 that TI12 will take place in October 2023 at the Climate Pledge Arena, “welcoming the largest attendance in the event’s history.” The Main Event will take held from October 27th to 29th, 2023, while the group stage and playoffs will be combined under one title this time, The Road to the International. Valve last staged TI in Seattle in 2017, when Team Liquid beat Newbee to become the grand winners.

The International 12 is coming to us, and it has been one of the main draws for the Dota 2 community since the tournament’s inception in 2011 at Gamescom. Valve is gearing up to host the 12th incarnation of the tournament, which will return to Seattle after a six-year hiatus.

Valve has stated that TI12 would be played out during the month of October, with the Road to The International beginning with the group stages on October 14, 2023. However, the developer has stated that this version of TI will only have three days on the main stage open to the public, with the rest of the event taking place behind closed doors.

The inaugural International took place in Cologne, Germany, during the trade expo Gamescom 2011, to introduce Dota 2 to a global audience. It garnered notice because of its massive $1.6 million USD prize pool, the largest of any single esports event at the time. The Dota 2 community has been able to contribute to the prize pool since 2013 by purchasing the Battle Pass, with 25% of the revenue going to the prize pool. In 2014, the prize pool exceeded $10 million, then $20 million in 2016, $30 million in 2019, and $40 million in 2021. Beginning in 2013, The International’s theme follows a colour cycle based on the five in-game runes: green, purple, gold, red, and blue.

From 2012 through 2017, the International was held in Seattle, Washington. The International was held in Vancouver, Canada in 2018. The International 2019 was hosted in Shanghai, China, and the prize pool exceeded $34 million, making it the highest prize pool for any single esports competition until The International 2021, which featured a $40 million prize pool.

The International will visit North America for the first time since 2018, and the United States for the first time since 2017. Needless to say, supporters in the region are ecstatic about the premiership’s return. Given that North American organisations have failed to win the title since 2015, regional teams such as Shopify Rebellion and Team SOLOMID are anticipated to launch a push.

A Battle Pass, like every previous TI in the past, is likely to be distributed before to the tournament. This Battle Pass is usually offered in the month of May. However, considering that TI’s timeframe has slipped from August to October, the Battle Pass might also be delayed by a few months.

Regardless of when the Pass is published, it is obvious that it will play a significant part in adding to TI’s prize pool. After all, it is the yearly Battle Pass crowd-funding that has allowed Dota 2 to boast the five largest prize pools in esports history.

So far, only Team Liquid has confirmed their participation in TI12, and the other teams that will confirm their participation in the event will be chosen progressively as the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) 2023 unfolds.

There will very certainly be no last chance qualification this year, since it was a one-time event offered by Valve last year to tackle the pandemic’s persistent travel difficulties, which had stopped many teams from competing in DPC tournaments.

Tundra Esports had a dominating run at the last TI in Singapore in 2022, defeating Team Secret 3-0 in the grand final to take the championship title and the lion’s share of the $18,930,775 USD prize money.
