Terence Crawford calls Errol Spence Jr. a “nobody” at a press conference before Las Vegas fight

The American rivals will compete for the undisputed welterweight championship in one of the most anticipated fights since Floyd Mayweather Jr’s 2015 encounter with Manny Pacquiao. The Omaha native (39-0) has the WBO championship, while The Truth (28-0) holds the IBF, WBA, and WBC crowns. After years of anticipation, fans will finally have the opportunity to witness both guys compete to discover who is the greatest at 147 pounds on July 29.

Crawford’s most recent fight was in December 2022, when he knocked out David Avanesyan in the sixth round, while Spence Jr. hasn’t fought since April 2022, when he overcame Yordenis Ugás via TKO in the tenth. The welterweight champions had their launch conference on June 13, formally announcing the match. There, ‘The Truth’ started the verbal battle by pledging to smoke his long-time opponent in Sin City next month. Spence Jr joked during the opening news conference that he was going to crush his opponent while simultaneously promoting his new product line.

There’s no denying that when Crawford faced Brook, he wasn’t a shadow of the boxer he once was. Crawford’s stoppage of Brook in the fourth round of their 2020 bout is still a tremendous accomplishment, but he shouldn’t fool himself. This wasn’t a prime Brook, nor was it even near.

“I won’t go too far and say all time, but my name would be up there in those discussions,” Terence Crawford told The Schmo when asked whether a victory over Errol Spence Jr would make him the all-time greatest boxer. “On July 29th, we’re taking all of those titles home,” Crawford remarked. “All those naysayers and people who doubted me and my skills and my ability to be who I say I am, and that’s the best fighter in the world.” “Errol Spence has to be his best version of himself and the guy that we know him to be,” Spence’s trainer, Derrick James, told The Schmo. “I believe the winner of this fight will be highly ranked.” Errol should be ranked extremely high based on the calibre of competition he has encountered.

Terence Crawford made a bold statement about his abilities as a professional boxer. However, his opponent, Spence Jr., hammered ‘Bud’ with opposing viewpoints, which naturally piqued the fans’ interest and raised the buzz for the bout. Crawford stated during the press conference that his bout with Spence Jr. will “solidify” him as “the greatest fighter of this era.” Spence Jr., on the other hand, completely disagreed with him. Instead, he ridiculed his assertion by mentioning his prior bouts.

“Definitely not, man; I ain’t gonna lie,” Spence Jr. added. You’ve never fought someone. You have not harmed anyone.” Spence Jr. went on to discuss Crawford’s battle with Shawn Porter. Spence said that Porter confessed that he did not train as much as he should have for the battle.

Crawford (38-0, 29 KO) has the WBO belt, which he earned with a knockout of Jeff Horn in June 2018. Six times he has successfully defended his championship, most recently against Avanesyan. Crawford has previously captured world titles at lightweight and light welterweight.

Spence (28-0, 22 KO) is the IBF, WBC, and WBA 147-pound world champion. Spence added the WBA belt to his collection in April, with a knockout victory against Yordenis Ugas. He first won the title in May 2017 when he defeated Kell Brook. Spence won the WBC title in September 2019 after defeating Porter.

‘I’ve been prepping my entire life for this moment, right here,’ Crawford said in front of reporters on Wednesday at the Palladium Times Square. ‘Moments like these don’t come along very frequently, and now is my moment. Terence Crawford reigns supreme. There’s nothing keeping me back. Neither Errol nor Derek. Nobody is going to stop me from reaching my goals on July 29th.’

‘I can assure you, I can promise that y’all will go away saying, ‘that child is extraordinary.’ You’re going to rank me with Floyd, Ali, and Frazier as one of the best of all time, and you can sit there and say, ‘Oh well, you ain’t fought nobody.’ And my response to it is, ‘I guess Errol is just another nobody I fought,’ he added.

‘I’m eager to put on a wonderful show and a terrific performance to show everyone how great I am. And prove to everyone why I’ll be one of the finest welterweights of all time. You don’t want to miss this battle, believe me. This is going to be a fantastic fight. I’m going to put on a spectacular performance and show everyone why we’re breaking people,’ she says. After Crawford was asked to expound on how he’ll be ‘gutting the big fish,’ one of Spence’s ring names, the two fighters engaged in a heated back-and-forth.’That’s a cap!’ Spence Jr cracked a joke. ‘You ain’t gonna catch me without a fishing pole, dude. I’m the tallest. You’re not going to catch me with a fishing rod. ‘How does capturing Moby Dick with a fishing rod look?’

Crawford said, “They’ve all been caught before.” ‘Every single one of them, and on July 29th, he’ll be apprehended as well. I’ve already grabbed a big enough hook for him and am reeling him in. I’m going to place him on a bank on July 29th. I’m going to gut him and fillet him, like I already stated.’

Crawford then asked the audience, ‘Y’all like fish? ‘How many of you enjoy fishing?’ before turning to Spence’s father, who was present, and saying, ‘I guess you enjoy fish too, pops. You may claim you enjoy fish, after all. You know your kid is “the big fish,” therefore he enjoys fish as well. We’re also planning to offer his grandfather a slice of large fish.’

Spence, who grew up on Long Island, NY, left the finest insult for last, claiming that he and his family are Jamaican and that they’smoke bud,’ a reference to Crawford’s nickname, ‘Bud.’ ‘You know how that works,’ the fighter with a 78 percent knockout win said. ‘It’s legal in Vegas, so we’re going to smoke your a**. Because it’s legal in Vegas, we’ll roll you up and smoke you.

Spence Jr. also knows that this is by far the most significant fight of his career. He also didn’t hold back when it came to telling his rival what he was up to. “Right now, this is the biggest fight in boxing. This is an epic battle. This fight is old-fashioned. This reminds me of the fights my dad told me about. It’s the best competing against the best.”

“Terence is a good fighter, and I’m going to break the will of another good fighter.” I’ll win because I’ll be the best both mentally and physically.” Spence concluded.

Even though it’s hard to say who will get his hand lifted after the fight, it’s a sure thing that boxing and sports enthusiasts will be the big winners, since the fight between two unbeatable and pound-for-pound greats will be remembered for a long time.
