UFC 290: Volkanovski crushes Rodriguez with TKO in third round

On July 8, the main event of UFC 290 featured a championship unification contest between UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and interim champion Yair Rodriguez. Volkanovski, the king of the featherweight division, lost his most recent match, becoming the first lightweight to lose in the UFC. He recently lost by a narrow unanimous decision against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 284. In contrast, in his most recent contest, Rodriguez decisively defeated Josh Emmett by way of second-round submission at UFC 284, winning the interim featherweight title.

In the main event of UFC 290, Alexander Volkanovski successfully defended his featherweight championship against Yair Rodriguez by technical knockout in the third round. With takedowns and ground and pound, Volkanovski quickly brought striking prodigy Rodriguez to the canvas. He then finished the fight with a sneaky right hook that rocked Rodriguez and set up a TKO at 4:19 of Round 3.

Volkanovski unintentionally head-butted Rodriguez just before the match ended, forcing the interim champion to take a moment to collect himself. The combatants who were watching the bout weren’t blind to that. However, it served as a further illustration of Volkanovski’s superiority at featherweight, and they were suitably pleased. The fact that UFC experts said the man from Wollongong was better than the current No. 1 fighter in the UFC was more evidence that he is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Volkanovski admitted after the fight that he would require surgery on his arm due to a problem he battled during his training camp, so it wasn’t like he was fully recovered. In addition, he had to fight off the worry that Rodriguez, possibly his toughest opponent to yet, may snap his outstanding run at this weight class. Volkanovski, who moved up to lightweight, will now be looking to get revenge on Islam Makhachev for his lone career MMA defeat, which occurred in February.

Prior to their battle on Sunday, Volkanovski called the electrifying Rodriguez the most “dangerous” foe he has ever faced. However, the Australian champion dominated for the most part, scoring seven takedowns, a career-high for Volkanovski. As the bout progressed, Volkanovski successfully resisted Rodriguez’s impressive kicking display and ultimately finished it with a well timed right hook.

Volkanovski is now 13-1 in the UFC and 26-2 overall in mixed martial arts (MMA) after the victory. Volkanovski’s victory over Rodriguez represents his fifth productive defence of the Featherweight belt. He declared he was going for the 155-pound title after the victory and stated his next defence may be against Ilia Topuria.
