Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul boxing match to be an exhibition bout
On July 20, Mike Tyson will face Jake Paul in the ring, but it doesn’t seem like the bout will go down in history as an official one.
In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, the 57-year-old boxing veteran said that his fight against the YouTuber who turned boxer will be an exhibition contest, but one without the usual limitations. Additionally, he said that Paul is misguided if he thinks he can harm him.
Four years after his last ring appearance and nearly two decades after his last professional bout, Tyson will face YouTuber Paul in Texas in July. Although the battle is slated to air on Netflix, no regulations have been published. However, Tyson has stated that the fight would still be a “real fight” despite being classified as a “exhibition.”
“Anything I’m afraid of, I confront it,” Tyson said during an interview on Fox News. “And that’s my personality. “Like right now, I’m scared to death. But as the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become because it’s reality. And in reality, I’m invincible.”
Paul will be 27 and Tyson will be 58. Jake Paul has vehemently denied that he will wear a helmet when he challenges Mike Tyson in a boxing match. However, several details of the July 20 bout are yet unknown, which might come as a huge letdown to fans hoping for a conventional boxing match.
Paul has been attempting, with varying degrees of success, to establish himself as a serious fighter for the past five years. His first loss was against Tommy Fury, who was ironically the first person he met with the title of “boxer” as his major job description. He started his career by nearly entirely taking out more experienced MMA fighters who were looking for a payday. Since then, Paul has prevailed against far less well-known boxers Ryan Bourland and Andre August, both of whom were stopped in the first round.
At the age of 20, Tyson defeated Trevor Berbick in his debut championship match in November 1986 to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history. With 50 victories and 6 losses, the American had a spectacular career finale.
“I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul. He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT. It’s a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him,” said Tyson.
Paul has “come a long way from YouTubing,” according to Tyson. “I saw him performing strange dances on YouTube when he was sixteen. “I’m not going to fight that guy,” he declared. “This guy is gonna come, he’s gonna try to hurt me, which I’m accustomed to, and he’s gonna be greatly mistaken.”
