Atletico Madrid supporters wave a banner reading “CR7 Not Welcome” during a friendly game
During a friendly match on Wednesday, Atletico Madrid fans displayed a “CR7 Not Welcome” banner in protest of their club’s attempts to pursue Cristiano Ronaldo. Atletico Madrid’s friendly versus Club Deportivo Numancia, fans protested the rumour linking Ronaldo to Atletico by erecting a large white banner that said “CR7 Not Welcome.” Atletico Madrid defeated Numancia 4-0 and the flag was plainly seen behind one of the goals.
Ronaldo is anxious to play Champions League soccer in the coming months, and with the 37-year-old entering his last year at Manchester United, it appears he may move in the not-too-distant future. In a recent statement, Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo seems to rule out any prospective Ronaldo transfer, calling it “practically impossible.”
“Rumors are rumours and should stay that way because if they spread, they would appear true, which they are not,” Cerezo told Spanish media.
“I’m not sure who came up with this rumour about Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid,” he remarked. “It isn’t true.”
An Atletico Madrid fan association urged the club in the early hours of Wednesday morning to rule out signing Cristiano Ronaldo because he “represents the antithesis” of their team principles.
Due to “family issues,” the 37-year-old has missed Manchester United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia. He has also told the club of his wish to depart this summer for a suitable offer. Ronaldo came to Manchester on Monday to discuss his future with United, but no formal settlement has been reached. Ten Hag stated in Bangkok that Ronaldo, who has one year left on his contract with United, is in his plans for the coming season and that he expects him to continue at the club.
“We’re planning for Cristiano Ronaldo for the season, and that’s it. I’m excited to collaborate with him. Cristiano will not be sold. He is in our plans, and we aim to achieve success together “explained the Dutchman.
“He’s not with us because of personal concerns. I chatted with him before this problem arose. I spoke with him and we had a fantastic chat. That is solely between Cristiano and myself. What I can affirm is that we had a pretty wonderful talk. I didn’t say anything to him after (the news).”said Ten Hag.
Cristiano Ronaldo responded on social media to a photo of Atletico Madrid fans exposing a sign that read ‘CR7 Not Welcome.’ The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was seen posting on Instagram with a sequence of crying laughter emojis in response to speculations tying the Portuguese megastar to a move to the Atletico Madrid.
