The BCCI announced on Friday that seasoned bowler Mohammed Shami will succeed injured Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian lineup for the forthcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.
“Mohammed Shami has been picked as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup roster by the All-India Senior Selection Committee. Shami has arrived in Australia and will join the squad in Brisbane for the warm-up matches,” BCCI general secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

Another significant change is the addition of Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj as reserves or standby players. Siraj substituted Shami, who had been on the standby list, while Shardul was chosen as an alternative for Deepak Chahar, who, like Bumrah, has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a back ailment.
Shami last appeared in T20 Internationals during the 2017 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE. He was expected to play in six T20Is against Australia and South Africa at home, but he came back positive for CIVID-19 and was forced to stay in isolation. He had to establish his fitness upon his return before the NCA allowed his journey to Australia. Shami has appeared in 17 T20Is and got 18 wickets.
The veteran fast bowler went through physical drills and received a fit certificate from the NCA after not playing a T20I since last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. He flew to Australia on Thursday and is now in Brisbane with the rest of the Indian team, where they will play two official warm-up games versus Australia on October 17 and New Zealand on October 19, before beginning their Super 12 competition against Pakistan on October 23 at Melbourne.
On October 23, India will kick off their World Cup campaign against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They are in Super 12 Group 2 with Pakistan, South Africa, and Bangladesh, and will be accompanied by two qualifiers.
