UFC Paris: Manon Fiorot Beats Rose Namajuna by unanimous decision

Fiorot and Rose Namajunas battled it out in Saturday’s flyweight co-main event, with the victor maybe earning a chance at the championship. The French star outworked and out-struck Namajunas for three rounds in front of a raucous audience, ultimately winning by unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28.

Namajunas kicked low to begin attacking in the fight. Fiorot made a point of avoiding the counter but still making a couple good shots. Namajunas attempted to take Fiorot down, but Fiorot effortlessly blocked him. Fiorot’s lead leg is already being marked up by Namajunas. Namajunas attempted a second takedown, but Fiorot again displayed strong defence. Before the round was through, Fiorot successfully executed a great combo.

Round 2 began with a huge right from Fiorot, but Namajunas immediately retaliated. Fiorot took advantage of Namajunas’ stumble by piling her up against the cage in an attempt to score a takedown. Namajunas avoided the takedown but consumed a breakaway combination.

Fiorot was forced to retreat after Namajunas’ direct left landing. This time, Fiorot tripped, and Namajunas flocked to seize her, but Fiorot managed to escape. A large gash on the side of Fiorot’s skull was the result of an unintentional head collision. Before the horn sounded, the two engaged in punching each other.

Fiorot had complete control of the range from the start, effectively countering Rose Namajunas’ blitzing strikes. She resisted the 31-year-old’s six takedown attempts and won on all three judges’ scorecards.

Fiorot’s UFC winning streak now stands at six, and she has recently defeated renowned opponents like as Katlyn Chookagian and Jennifer Maia. However, her victory over Namajunas is by far her most significant in MMA. The winner of this fight might face the winner of Grasso-Shevchenko II or Erin Blanchfield in a championship eliminator. Women’s flyweight has clearly grown in strength, and Valentina Shevchenko’s stranglehold on the class has finally been broken.

Manon Fiorot executed the spoilsport by defeating Rose Namajunas for the second time in a row. Previously, in May of last year, she lost her UFC strawweight championship to Carla Esparza. The Frenchwoman put up a strong performance, seemingly outclassing and outworking Namajunas for three rounds and earning the greatest win of her career.

“First and foremost, thank you to the crowd, it was unbelievable,” Fiorot said in the octagon. “I have a lot of respect for Rose, thank you for accepting the fight, Rose, she’s still incredible. That was a former champion, now I want to play for the champion. Valentina, anyone who’s ready, I’m there.”

“Absolutely, of course,” she explained when asked if she’s ready to fight for the title shot next. “I’m the one who needs to take one of these champions and I deserve a shot at being the champion.”

On September 16, 2023, Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko will square off. This is a rematch of their UFC 285 rematch, which Grasso won by submission in the fourth round.
