Sune Luus, South Africa’s captain, won the toss and chose Sri Lanka to bat first. The Proteas got off to a flying start thanks to bowler Shabnim Ismail, who dismissed opening batsman Hasini Perera on the first ball of the game. Sri Lankan skipper and opener Chamari Athapaththu, on the other hand, lasted for 29 balls and scored 15 runs to put the brakes on South Africa’s unrelenting bowlers.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for their lowest T20I total, with only one batsman reaching double digits – Chamari Athapaththu. They had four ducks and just one partnership of more than ten runs, and they were extremely aggressive in their approach, with numerous wayward drives. Shabnim Ismail tested them with her pace, Masabata Klaas’ lengths were tough to break down, and Nadine de Klerk moved the ball both ways, leaving Sri Lanka with little options.
With a meagre goal of 47 to chase, South Africa made quick work of the chase, winning in just over six overs. Sri Lankan bowlers went off their lines, allowing easy boundaries to Proteas openers Anneke Bosch and Tazmin Brits.
Lizelle Lee’s departure has haunted South Africa in recent weeks. Tazmin Brits and Anneke Bosch showed signs of settling into opening positions, putting up 64 runs in 9.1 overs against England and ensuring the chase against Sri Lanka was professional and swift. They were rarely tested by a demoralised Sri Lankan onslaught, but they timed the ball brilliantly and exploited spaces at will. They hit five boundaries and scored at a good speed to win the game one ball after the powerplay.
