IND vs WI 4th T20I: India defeats the West Indies by 59 runs

India defeated the West Indies by 59 runs at Lauderhill, Florida, to set the five-match series score to 3-1. Their attacking style of batting helped them post 191 even though they tapered off in the second half of their innings, and their bowlers used cutters well to stifle West Indies’ batting. Coming out to chase the 192-run goal, the West Indies batted quite well and got off to a great start before Avesh Khan snatched a couple of wickets.

India lost the toss and were forced to bat first, a choice that proved to be bang on. Skipper Rohit Sharma got off to a good start before going down to Alazari Joseph. After that, SKY also left. Pant took over at this point and went on to score 44 arduous runs before losing his wicket. India was having trouble in the middle overs, and neither Deepak Hooda nor Sanju Samson were able to make a difference. Finally, it took some ferocious smashes from Axar Patel to propel India to a total of 191/5. (20).

Going for a target of over 14 per over in the series it is reasonable to suppose Avesh was scrutinised in this match. He came in after Bhuvneshwar Kumar who conceded 14 runs in the first over and utilised the leg cutter well to dismiss Brandon King with a return catch and Devon Thomas with a skier to mid-off. The West Indies needed a spectacular innings from someone in the middle order now.

Rohit Sharma stated: “How we played this game was most pleasing. Conditions were not easy; we batted really well. Lot of thought with that. How we bowled was good to see as well. Pitch was so slow, and you can use that to your advantage. I thought it was a good score, but with the kind of line-up West Indies have, no score is safe… You know what happens when you keep taking wickets. We do understand Avesh’s talent. Anyone can have one or two bad games… give players enough game time in the middle. He used his height and variations really well. I would just like to thank all the people who came to watch the game.”

With two left-handed hitters in the middle, Rohit took the surprise decision to call on left-arm spinner Axar to deliver the fifth over. Pooran was merciless, hitting three sixes and a four, but the over ended in a letdown with a run-out as Kyle Mayers sent him back after attempting a short single.

India finished the game quickly, with Arshdeep Singh bowling in the middle overs for the first time in T20Is and dismissing the dangerous Jason Holder to ensure there was no way back for the West Indies.

Avesh Khan the Player of the Match remarked: “Feel really good, since I didn’t do well in the last two matches. I bowled hard lengths. I just talked to my coaches and captains. They said, “we are backing you”. They were backing me; but there is one match to go, and I am focussing on that. The ball was stopping a bit, so I was mixing my slower balls with the hard length. It feels like India. It feels like home. Really happy they came to see us.”
