Brentford demolishes and humiliates Manchester United 4-0
Manchester United’s disheartening start to the Premier League season continued with a 4-0 thrashing at Brentford on Saturday. This was United’s first loss to Brentford since 1938. Man U conceded 4 goals in the opening 35 minutes itself. Brentford took merciless advantage of a string of blunders by the visitors, ensuring United’s eighth consecutive away league defeat. It was perhaps Brentford’s best ever result, one they will never forget in the Premier League.

For the first time since August 21st, 1992, United completed the day at the bottom of the Premier League table. They have only seven points from their past ten league games. Only Wolves (six) and Southampon (five) have less.
Brentford’s starting eleven cost £45.5 million to assemble. Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Jadon Sancho, Fred and Bruno are the five players in United’s starting lineup that cost more on their own.
United finished the 2021-22 season with just 58 points from 38 Premier League games and had subsequently appointed Erik ten hag as manager. United are already in a bad mood after finishing sixth last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick and without winning any trophies in five years. Ten Hag is determined to turn the club around, but he has so far been unable to apply his ideology on the team.
“They are good players, and have to take responsibility on the pitch, as a team and as individuals, and that’s what we didn’t do,” Ten Hag remarked after the game. “I asked them to play with belief and take responsibility for their performance, and that’s what they didn’t do.”
“It’s only when we stick together and work hard that we will overcome that. You have to take belief on to the pitch for yourself and the team,” he added.
“Don’t get me wrong, the manager is responsible as well, he has the main responsibility, and I take that. And I will work on that. I have to give them belief, but they have to give it by themselves,” said a saddened Ten Hag.
Brentford took merciless advantage of a string of blunders by the visitors, ensuring United’s eighth consecutive away league defeat.
The onslaught began in the 10th minute, when United goalkeeper David de Gea let Josh Dasilva’s feeble shot to slip past him.
Eight minutes later, De Gea sent the ball to former Brentford player Christian Eriksen, who was caught in control, and Mathias Jensen tapped home.
Brentford fans were thrilled when United’s defense failed to deal with a corner and Ben Mee flicked in a close-range header to make it 3-0, while United’s new manager Erik ten Hag looked glum in his coaching area. For Brentford’s fourth goal, which was a beauty Ivan Toney sent a diagonal pass to Bryan Mbeumo during a counterattack, and Mbeumo beat De Gea with ease.
At halftime, the Dutchman called the team’s performance a “embarrassment” and expected a reaction after the break. He made three substitutions at halftime, but there was no comeback as Brentford comfortably maintained their four-goal advantage.

The humiliating defeat will do little to appease Manchester United supporters, who are already enraged with club owners the Glazer family. Poor performances and a perceived failure to attract the proper players to remodel the squad in the off-season had prompted fans to renew calls for the Glazers to sell the club. Using the hashtag Empty Old Trafford, United fans are attempting to organize a boycott of next week’s home game against long-time rivals Liverpool.
