Head coach Scott Parker sacked by Bournemouth after 9-0 loss to Liverpool

Bournemouth have fired head coach Scott Parker after only four Premier League games. Parker left Fulham 14 months ago and became the manager of Bournemouth. Last season, he led Bournemouth to promotion to the Premier League behind his old team.

Bournemouth began the season with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at home. Since then they have also lost 4-0 to Manchester City and 3-0 to Arsenal. The latest being a horrifying 9-0 defeat at Liverpool. They have surrendered 16 goals in those games while failing to score themselves.

Parker stated after the game at Anfield that the club did not spend enough money this summer, despite paying £22.6 million for two players and making three free transfers. “I have been clear how this season could look for us and I stick by that,” he stated. “We need to make a decision and try and help this young group who at times are struggling for air. Every one of us needs to make that decision. We have been trying to get more quality in and there are a million reasons why.”

Since Southampton fired Paul Sturrock in August 2004, Parker’s firing is the Premier League’s earliest dismissal. Bournemouth have signed Marcus Tavernier from Middlesbrough and Marcos Senesi from Feyenoord this summer, in addition to free transfers for Ryan Fredericks, Joe Rothwell, and Neto.

Cherries co-owner Maxim Demin told the club’s official website: “I would like to place on record my gratitude to Scott and his team for their efforts during their time with us. Our promotion back to the Premier League last season under his tenure will always be remembered as one of the most successful seasons in our history.

“However, in order for us to keep progressing as a team and a Club as a whole, it is unconditional that we are aligned in our strategy to run the club sustainably. We must also show belief in and respect for one another. That is the approach that has brought this club so much success in recent history, and one that we will not veer from now. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately.”

Bournemouth have given up more goals in their first four Premier League games than any other team in the competition’s history (16). The last time a top-flight team surrendered as many goals at this point in the season was Arsenal in 1963-64. (also 16). Gary O’Neil will take command of Wednesday’s home game against Wolves, with Shaun Cooper and Tommy Elphick assisting.
