Everton FC: Ben Godfrey provides an update on the status of his injury
Ben Godfrey has issued an update on his recuperation from a fractured fibula, assuring that “nothing will change” when he returns to play.
The Everton defender was injured in a last-ditch tackle on Chelsea’s Kai Havertz less than 10 minutes into the Blues’ season opener.

Replays indicated that the ball had gone out of play, despite the fact that the assistant referee did not raise his flag seconds before the incident at Goodison Park. Godfrey says he is delighted with his development one month after surgery and hopes to be eligible again in “a couple of months.”
Following surgery last month, the defender has already began his recovery work at Finch Farm. Blues manager Frank Lampard recently stated that the extended mid-season World Cup break will allow him to recover fitness without missing any extra games.
Frank Lampard should be glad that Godfrey’s rehabilitation from the severe injury appears to be proceeding well, as the Everton centre-back has been one of the most reliable performances in the team when he is fit to play.
“It’s going extremely well,” he remarked on Everton Live, the club’s pre-match programme. “Obviously, losing out on playing is difficult, but it’s all part of the game.”
“In terms of the injury, things are doing nicely. I’m getting better every day, and I can’t wait to get back. It’s difficult mentally. As players, football is all we know, so losing it is difficult to deal with – but I’m fortunate to have supportive teammates, family, and friends at the Club. Everyone has kept me going by telling me that this is just a temporary situation and that I’ll be back soon,” Ben added.
“I’d want to acknowledge the fans for their expressions of support, as well as everyone else in football who has reached out to me. Thank you for your encouraging remarks; they are really appreciated. When will I return? I’m going by feel. It’ll take a few months, but I’m just taking each day as it comes, and when the time comes, it’ll come,” he said.
When questioned if the injury would impact his harsh tackling, Godfrey responded, “That won’t change after this – don’t worry about that! It’s all part of the game. I’ve made hundreds of tackles and it’s only occurred once, so I’ll be right back at it.”
For the time being, Godfrey is a spectator, but he maintains the team is confident behind the scenes, despite the fact that they are still looking for their first league win of the season. That, he feels, is due in part to new faces in the team, particularly fellow central defenders James Tarkowski and Conor Coady, who have attracted Godfrey’s attention.
“They’re fantastic additions,” he stated. “Good men and fantastic footballers – you don’t need me to say that because we’ve all seen how good they’ve been through the years. We’ve made significant improvements in terms of personality and squad additions. They’re terrific men to be around, and we’ll make the most of it. They’ll assist us get started.”
Godfrey appeared in nine of the Toffees’ 17 points-scoring games last season, so his good impact on the team should not be underestimated. When Godfrey returns to fitness, it will be a huge boost for Lampard and Everton.
