Mark Boucher to stand down as South Africa’s coach following the T20 World Cup

Cricket South Africa has confirmed that men’s head coach Mark Boucher would stand down at the end of the T20I World Cup in Australia.

The organisation announced Boucher’s resignation in a statement posted on Monday afternoon, following the end of South Africa’s Test series against England, which England won 2-1.

“Mr Boucher has decided to retire in order to seek other options in keeping with his future professional and personal ambitions,” according to the statement. “While Cricket SA regrets that Mr Boucher will not be able to complete the period of his contract, it respects his choice and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

Boucher has been in charge since December 2019 and has guided the Proteas to 11 Test victories, including a stunning 2-1 series triumph against India at home in January.

boucherBoucher’s final series before the World Cup will be a white-ball tour of India beginning September 28. They are grouped with Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan in the World Cup.

Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s director of cricket, stated, “We are profoundly sorry by Mark’s choice to leave us, but we understand and accept his decisions. He is a Proteas icon who has done so much for the game in our nation, both on and off the field, in the previous three years, which we much appreciate. He has laid a solid foundation for South Africa to thrive in all three forms, and I’m confident we’ll see the results at the T20 World Cup next month.”

“He has helped us navigate some tough seas following the retirement of so many veteran players and has helped establish some strong foundations for the next generation of Proteas. We are incredibly thankful to him for his efforts and wish him luck in the next phase of his career,” he concluded.
