Indian pace bowler Shami is ruled out of Australia T20s owing to Covid virus
Mohammed Shami’s return to T20Is has been postponed due to a positive COVID 19 test. He will miss the Australia series, which begins on September 20 in Mohali.
The news is disappointing for India, who had intended to use all of their pacers in the build-up to the T20 World Cup, which begins in less than a month. Shami was chosen as a reserve player for the World Cup despite not being a member of the T20I squads during the year. India had wanted to put his abilities to the test against the world champions, but that does not appear to be viable at the time.
After experienced fast bowler Mohammad Shami was ruled out, pacer Umesh Yadav was added to India’s side for the three-match T20I series against Australia.
Following the three-match series, which begins on Tuesday in Mohali, India will play three games at home against South Africa as part of their preparations for the T20 World Cup in Australia, which begins in less than a month.
Shami, who was not named to India’s current Asia Cup roster, last featured for the national team in the shortest format in November, during their previous T20 World Cup campaign in the United Arab Emirates.
Umesh Yadav, who played the final of his seven T20Is against Australia in 2019, is back in action after recovering from a quadriceps injury. “Yes, Shami tested positive for COVID-19. However, there is no need to be concerned because the symptoms are minor. He will, however, be isolated and will be able to rejoin the squad after he tests negative. It’s terrible, but that’s how life goes,” On condition of anonymity, a top BCCI source told reporters.
When asked how long he believes Shami would need to recuperate, the insider expressed optimism that he will be ready for the upcoming series against South Africa.
“Shami is expected to be available for the following series against South Africa. There are 10 days till the start of that series. So we are hopeful, ” he stated.
However, Umesh’s comeback in this format is nothing short of a fairytale, given his county career with Middlesex was cut short by a quadriceps injury. He had a fantastic first leg of the IPL 2022 for KKR, swinging the ball at a high rate. He had a fantastic Royal London Cup for Middlesex, taking 16 wickets in 7 List A games, including a five-wicket and a four-wicket haul.
“These two series (against Australia and South Africa) will be pretty difficult, with top teams in the globe competing. It’ll be a fantastic test for us,” India skipper Rohit Sharma told reporters.
“We tested a number of guys and saw what each of those individuals brought to the table. We have a pretty clear thought process and plan for moving forward,” he concluded.
Update 🚨 – Mohd. Shami tests positive for COVID-19, Navdeep Saini ruled out of India ‘A’ series.
