Shimron Hetmyer cut from the West Indies T20 World Cup roster after missing flight

Shimron Hetmyer has been dismissed from the West Indies’ men’s T20 World Cup roster after missing a “rescheduled” trip to Australia. CWI stated that the decision was made “unequivocally” by the selection panel, which also named Shamarh Brooks as Hetmyer’s substitute.

Following the completion of the CPL on Saturday, the remainder of the West Indies squad flew to Australia in separate groups. When questioned about the situation, white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran stated, “To be honest, it is not my current concern. There has been a choice made, and there will be repercussions for your actions. At the moment, all I want to think about is why we’re here and how we’re going to acheive our goals.”

The CWI Selection Panel reached the decision when Shimron Hetmyer missed his re-scheduled trip to Australia, which had been moved from Saturday, October 1, at his request, owing to family obligations. With travel availability a major issue, a seat was obtained for him to depart Guyana on Monday, October 3, meaning he would miss the first T20I (T20I) against Australia on Wednesday, October 5 at the Metricon Stadium. Hetmyer notified Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams on the morning of 3rd that he would not be able to make it to the airport in time for his departure to New York this afternoon.

“This afternoon, we told the CWI board of directors that the selection panel had unanimously chosen to replace Shimron Hetmyer in our T20 World Cup team with Shamarh Brooks,” Adams stated. “While we moved Shimron’s flight from Saturday to Monday due to family obligations, we made it clear to him that if there were any further delays or issues with his journey to Australia, we would have no choice but to replace him in the squad, as we are not willing to jeopardize the team’s ability to prepare for this hugely important global event.”

West Indies’ T20 World Cup campaign will begin on October 17 against Scotland. They are in Group B, along with Scotland, Zimbabwe, and Ireland.
