FA Women’s National League: Watford 5-1 Plymouth Argyle

In a commanding 5-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle, Gemma Davison scored in less than two minutes at Grosvenor Vale.

Davison assisted her first goal of the season for Flo Fyfe, who scored twice with Megan Chandler and Ellie Head, with Argyle’s Charlotte Whitmore scoring a consolation.

The win moves the Hornets two points behind league leaders Oxford United, who have a game in hand against Crawley Wasps on Tuesday night.

Davison’s first was taken well, cutting onto her right foot and blasting into the top corner as the visitors struggled to get going after their 200-mile journey.

Poppy Wilson then headed over from a looping corner, before Head slammed a shot past of the post, as the team continued to press for further goals.

Despite their dominance, Damon Lathrope’s team was fortunate to maintain the lead as Whitmore found space behind the backline and flicked around goalkeeper Georgie Ferguson, with captain Chandler coming to the rescue with a determined last-ditch slide challenge.

watford2Fyfe answered  Argyle’s little storm with a well-taken strike, connecting nicely with Davison’s pass across goal. Fyfe’s total was doubled 10 minutes before halftime. Wilson regained control and supplied the winger with a ball, which Fyfe slotted beyond Jasmine Read for her third goal of the afternoon.

Watford needed to answer fast after Whitmore scored two minutes into the second half, and they did so in style. Chandler, who scored from a corner in last week’s 1-1 draw with Oxford United, jumped highest to nod in the fourth of the day and put the hosts back on track.

watford3With 15 minutes remaining, Head earned her due for an excellent midfield performance by converting replacement Adekite Fatuga-Dada’s pass.

The Golden Girls are undefeated and prospering in their new home, having scored 20 goals in four games at Grosvenor Vale this season. Next up is a trip to Crawley Wasps on Tuesday night [October 11, 7.45pm], when they will have the opportunity to go top of the league for the first time this season.
