Bangladesh Skipper Shakib Al Hasan: “We would not use the rain stoppage as an excuse for losing to India.”

Bangladesh T20 captain Shakib Al Hasan stated that they would not use the rain stoppage as an excuse to lose to India after suffering a five-run setback in the D/L method on the final ball of a nail-biting Group 2 Super 12 match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup.

Liton Das struck a scorching fifty to offer India a major blow, but his teammates failed to capitalise as Bangladesh lost by 5 runs (D/L Method) in a rain-soaked Super 12 encounter of the ICC T20 World Cup in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Liton, who had a 21-ball 50, finished with 60 off 27 balls, hitting seven fours and three sixes, his first T20I fifty.

“There are lots of moments in the match that we can say is the defining moment. Of course the way Litton was batting, his run out was crucial. We lost the momentum after the game was stopped due to rain. But we don’t have rain in our hands, so we have to accept it and needed to play accordingly,” said Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan to reporters.

When the game resumed, Shakib was spotted discussing the rainy outfield conditions with on-field officials. Speaking on these difficulties, he indicated that we don’t have any options, and we accepted the umpires’ verdict.

“Did we have a choice? Who should I persuade? Is it possible for me to persuade the umpire? The umpires called both captains and informed us of the objective, the playing rules, and the number of overs we would be playing. So we accepted it,” he added.

“I mean that’s the decision that umpires make, we don’t make decisions, you know we are here to play cricket, both teams wanted to play full 20 overs. Unfortunately, rain interrupted but I am happy the way both the teams played really well, we were so close like 2016 World Cup but wasn’t close enough. It was little slippery, that suits the batting side rather than the bowling side and we should not make that an excuse,” he stated.

“Normally, that suits the batting side instead of the bowling side, and we should not use that as an excuse,” he added. Shakib went on to say that Liton should have been more attentive because he slid twice, which was terrible.

“Yes, it is unfortunate for Litton as he slipped twice and I am not sure whether he was running inside the pitch or through the side of the pitch, where there was grass, whether he was running from that side or not, because when he slipped for the first time, he should have been careful. But I am not sure through which area he was running, because I am the next batsman and didn’t understand through which area he was running,” he said.

“Most teams will get 52 in last five overs with eight wickets in hand in these kind of conditions and we should have chased it down. With the batting line-up we had, I believed that we were capable of doing it. Maybe we panicked a bit in the middle overs, we tried to play too many shots. Nurul and Taskin batted well and brought us back in the game,” he reckoned.

Finally, when discussing the game’s fair and unfair situations, he stated: “Our locker room was really comfortable because we had begun the game very well. We don’t care if restarting the game is fair or unfair. Unfortunately, we lost the game, which was part of the problem.”
