FIFA World Cup 2022: Round of 16 Fixtures and details
The World Cup is attended by 32 teams that have advanced via qualifying matches in their respective zones.
The group stage will be their first challenge once they get at the World Cup. The 32 teams were divided into eight groups of four teams each in 2022. The group stage includes of traditional round-robin group play, with each team facing off against the other three teams once. Each group stage win is worth three points, a draw is for one, and a defeat is worth none. If two teams are deadlocked on points, the initial tiebreakers are goal difference and then goals.

The top two finishers in each group proceed to the knockout round, with the winner and runner-up of each group allocated into a predefined bracket that begins with the Round of 16.
Every match, from the Round of 16 through the final, is single elimination. From the Round of 16, teams proceed to the quarterfinals, then to the semifinals, and finally to the championship.
The current FIFA World Cup’s group-stage matches concluded on Friday night. After 48 matches, 16 teams advanced to the Round of 16, including reigning champions France, five-time winners Brazil, Argentina, Spain, England, and Portugal, as well as 10 other countries. The future matches will all be knockout games from now on, and teams who fail to win will be eliminated from the competition. But, before we get to the Round of 16 games, let’s take a look at the eight games in which underdogs stunned strong favourites for the championship.
Saudi Arabia vs. Argentina (2-1): In their tournament opener on November 22, Saudi Arabia fought back from a goal behind in the first half to defeat Lionel Messi’s Argentina 2-1. Argentina came into this game with a 36-match undefeated streak, but they were unable to break through Saudi’s defence after taking the lead early in the second half.

Morocco vs. Belgium (2-0): World No. 2 Belgium played Morocco in their second Group F encounter of the 2017 FIFA World Cup. To no one’s surprise, the star-studded Red Devils failed to score and instead let up two goals, losing 0-2.
Tunisia vs. France (1-0): French manager Didier Deschamps shuffled his squad for the last Group D encounter against Tunisia in order to rest his first-team players ahead of the knockout stages. However, his strategy failed when the African nation defeated them 1-0.
Australia vs. Denmark (1-0): World No. 10 Denmark failed to win a single game in this year’s FIFA World Cup, finishing last in Group D. They were defeated 0-1 by Australia in their last group encounter, securing a berth in Round 16 by virtue of the win.
Japan vs. Spain (2-1): Similar to their performance against Germany in the tournament opener, Japan rallied from a goal down against Spain in their last Group E encounter, winning 2-1 to not only secure a place in the Round of 16, but also the top of the points table.

South Korea vs. Portugal (2-1): South Korea played Portugal in their last Group H encounter of the 2017 FIFA World Cup. Their qualifying to the Round of 16 was contingent on the outcome of this encounter, and by scoring the game-winning goal in the 91st minute, they stunned Cristiano Ronaldo’s team 2-1 and also clinched a place in the Round of 16 due to a greater goal difference than Uruguay.
Cameroon vs. Brazil (1-0): In one of the World Cup’s biggest upsets, Cameroon defeated five-time champions Brazil by a goal to nil in their last Group G encounter. Brazil, like France, rotated their roster, which backfired on them. Regardless of the outcome, Brazil finished first in Group G’s points standings.
