Rohit Sharma: “When we give players a break, its to manage the workload keeping the bigger picture in mind.”

India skipper Rohit Sharma has stated that workload management is crucial, highlighting the need of rests for Indian players. Team India will play Bangladesh in the first of three one-day internationals (ODIs) at Dhaka.

Speaking before of India’s match against Bangladesh, Sharma stated that there is a lot of cricket going on, which is why the players need rests.

Team India is presently in Bangladesh for a series of ODIs and Tests. The India tour to Bangladesh in 2022 will include of three One-Day International (ODI) matches and two Test matches. The one-day internationals will be held on December 4, 7, and 10, while the test matches will be held from December 14 to 18 and December 22 to 26.

When asked if World Cup preparations begin with the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, which begins here on Sunday, Rohit made it plain that there is still time for his side to start thinking about the big event.

“Every time you play a game, its preparing for something. The World Cup is still 8-9 months from now. We can’t think so far ahead. We need to keep an eye on what we need to do as team,” Rohit told reporters ahead of the first ODI.

He stated that starting to plan too early will not benefit anybody, but he also stated that the team think-tank understands which route it needs to take. Rohit Sharma stated that he and head coach Rahul Dravid have a “good notion” of their intentions and would narrow them down as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 approaches. According to the 35-year-old, they are presently focused on winning the series against Bangladesh since “looking too far ahead often doesn’t help.”

“It is very, very important for us not to start thinking about so many things. Like we need to play this guy or that guy. Me and coach have fair idea what to do. We will narrow it down once we come closer to the World Cup,” he added.

The India captain stated that the squad wants its top players to play at high intensity all of the time, which necessitates player rest. “Cricket is not going to stop. There will always be lot of cricket and we need to manage our players. You want your best players to play with higher intensity all the time. So it is important to give them breaks, manage them as freshness is very important,” Sharma added.

“As professionals, we have to keep up the intensity. Yes, there’s a lot of cricket and that’s why we give them breaks. And people need to understand that when we give players a break, it is only to manage the workload keeping the bigger picture in mind,” said Sharma.

Rohit Sharma praised Team Bangladesh, saying they are a very difficult side that has vastly improved and that defeating them will be difficult.

“I think it has been an exciting rivalry for all these years. You know the last seven-eight years, the Bangladesh cricket team has been a different team, they are a very challenging team and we didn’t have easy wins against them. You have to play good cricket to win against them. And every time we played them it has been a very close game. Even in the T20 WC, it was a close game. In 2015, we lost the series here. We know they are a very improved team in the last few years. So we have to play our best cricket to win this. It is not going to be easy for us,” he concluded.
