Bangladesh win by 1 wicket, defeat India in First ODI

Bangladesh overcame India by one wicket in the opening edition of the three-match ODI series, here at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, thanks to a remarkable tenth-wicket stand between Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman.

As the Bangladeshi spinners had a successful day at the field, Indian hitters struggled to establish momentum on what seemed to be a two-paced pitch in Dhaka. Shikhar Dhawan was out in the sixth over while trying a daring reverse sweep off Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s bowling after a cautious start.

Skipper Rohit Sharma then had a 25-run second-wicket stand with previous skipper Virat Kohli before being bowled out in the same over by experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. However, from a grave 49/3 position with three of India’s most experienced hitters sent back to the pavilion, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul helped India claw their way back into the contest.

Rahul resumed his endurance strategy with Washington Sunder as his new partner after Iyer was removed in the 20th over with a 39-ball 24. The wicket-keeper hitter received little help, as none of India’s last six batsmen scored more than 20 runs, but his 70-ball 73 was enough to get the men in blue near to a 200-run total.

With just 186 runs to defend, Rohit Sharma’s squad wanted to set the tone right away, and Deepak Chahar assisted them by removing Najmul Hossain Shanto in the opening delivery.

Anamul Haque Bijoy retired after scoring 14 runs, but just when it appeared the game’s complexion was shifting, Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan’s combination enabled the hosts reclaim the lead.

Rahim scored 18 runs, while Mahmudullah contributed 14. They were removed in consecutive deliveries, which was followed by a succession of wickets as Bangladesh found themselves battling at 136/9.

Miraz played the knock of his life with the objective still 51 runs away, hitting an undefeated 38 runs from 39 deliveries. Mustafizur Rahman, the 11th hitter, should also be commended for his courageous performance, as he stayed undefeated on 10 runs.

Mohammed Siraj was one of India’s most outstanding bowlers once again, taking three key wickets. Aside from him, newcomer Kuldeep Sen and all-rounder Washington Sundar deserve credit for taking two wickets each.

Litton Das, Bangladesh captain: “Very happy. When I was in the dressing room, I was really nervous, but the way Fizz and Miraz batted, I enjoyed it a lot. The bowlers bowled really well at the start. When me and Shakib were batting, we thought we could chase it easily. But when we got out, it got tricky. I had faith on the others but I have no words to describe this feeling. Congratulations to Miraz.”

Mehidy Hasan, Player of the Match: “Thanks to Allah. I am really excited. Mustafizur and I just thought that we need to believe. I just told him to stay calm and play 20 balls. I am really enjoying bowling. The wicket in the morning was a bit tricky, and I enjoyed bowling. This performance is really memorable for me.”

Rohit Sharma, Indian captain: “It was a very close game. We did very well to come back into the game. We did not bat well. We bowled pretty well and kept them under pressure till the end. They held their nerves in the backend. If you look back at how we bowled, of course the last few overs, we would have liked to get a wicket. We kept taking wickets all through. It wasn’t enough runs. Another 30-40 runs would have made a difference. With KL and Washy, we could have got there. Unfortunately, we lost wickets in the middle, and it is not easy to come back. The pitch was a bit challenging, the odd ball was turning. You have to understand how to play. There are no excuses, we are used to such types of conditions. We need to look at how to bat against their spinners in these conditions. The genes are there, these guys grew up playing in such conditions. It is all about handling pressure. Once you do, it gives you confidence. It is important to learn how to handle those pressure situations. Hopefully, we change things around in the next game.”

India Score: 186 all out in 41.2 overs (KL Rahul 73, Shakib Al Hasan 5/36, Ebadat Hossain 4/47).
Bangladesh Score: 187 for 9 in 46 overs (Mehidy Hasan Miraz 38 not out, Litton Das 41, Mohammed Siraj 3/32).
