Katie Taylor defeats Chantelle Cameron to claim the undisputed world super lightweight title

By defeating Chantelle Cameron via majority decision, Katie Taylor has gained the undisputed boxing title at two weights and exacted revenge on her sole professional defeat. Taylor, whose lightweight belts were not at stake, now has Cameron’s world super-lightweight championships at 140 pounds.

boxTaylor came into the battle desperate to win after Cameron handed her her first professional defeat in the same venue five months prior, and she set about her mission from the first ring of the bell, with nearly the whole 9,000-person crowd roaring her on. Taylor entered the bout with 22 victories and one defeat, while Cameron was unbeaten after 18 fights.

The judges scored the fight 98-92, 96-94, and 95-95 at Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday night, bringing the Irishwoman’s record to 23-1. This was six months after a majority ruling at the same location went in Cameron’s favour.

Similar to their previous encounter, two warriors engaged in brave combat without yielding an inch. Cameron, who had been hit in the head early on, fought for the most of the ten rounds although blood was pouring from her forehead. However, Taylor prevailed as he landed the more effective blows throughout the most of the fight.

Although Taylor was the better boxer this time around, burying Cameron’s efforts with her clever combinations, Cameron had good right to be resentful of the larger card because several of the rounds were difficult to score.

The opponent had to cope with a significant gash on her forehead following a head-on collision in the opening rounds; the doctor assessed the wound’s seriousness twice before to the fourth round. Taylor’s blows looked to have more venom than the previous battle, although never coming near to halting Cameron, and they seldom prevented Cameron from pressing forward.

boxingNonetheless, Taylor, at 37, was able to take a lead by the midway point and fought and held well to ensure Cameron was constantly following. With Taylor publicly advocating for a trilogy fight at Croke Park, it is expected that these two will square off again in 2024, with both fighting for legacy and the highest paydays of their careers.

Conor McGregor, a former UFC champion, congratulated both contestants, but lauded Taylor for her return despite losing the championship six months previously. “What a comeback! What a redemption! What a hero of Ireland!” he wrote in one of his several posts praising Taylor. It was a well-deserved victory, but a tight one between two dedicated boxers.
