McLaren Ace Claims Back-to-Back Wins, Takes Championship Lead in High-Speed Street Battle
The floodlit walls of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit bore witness to Oscar Piastri’s (McLaren) continued rise, as the Australian secured his third victory of the 2026 season in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, crossing the line ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull) to claim the drivers’ championship lead for the first time in his career. In a race defined by the ultra-fast street circuit’s demands for precision, bold overtakes, and flawless energy management under the new regulations, Piastri’s composure and McLaren’s pace proved decisive.
Piastri started from pole and held firm at the start, but drama erupted immediately: Verstappen, pushing hard in Turn 1, left the track while battling for position and gained an advantage—earning a 5-second time penalty from the stewards. This incident shifted the dynamic early, allowing Piastri to control the race tempo. The high-speed layout amplified the 2026 cars’ focus on battery deployment for overtakes, producing several thrilling moves on the long straights.
Strategy played out cleanly with a one-stop approach for most frontrunners; Piastri pitted under green-flag conditions and emerged in clear air after Verstappen served his penalty during his stop cycle. From there, Piastri managed his tires expertly on the abrasive surface, fending off Verstappen’s late charge. He took the checkered flag 2.843 seconds ahead, with Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) securing third (+8.104s) for the team’s first podium of the season after strong qualifying pace.

The win marked Piastri’s second consecutive triumph (following Bahrain) and propelled him to the top of the standings, edging ahead of teammates and rivals in a tight early-season fight. Verstappen’s runner-up finish kept Red Bull competitive despite the penalty, showcasing their recovery potential after earlier struggles. Leclerc’s podium highlighted Ferrari’s upward trajectory, while Lando Norris (McLaren) recovered impressively to fourth, adding to the team’s strong haul.
Mercedes’ George Russell finished fifth, maintaining solid points but unable to challenge the leaders on Jeddah’s demanding layout. The night race delivered edge-of-the-seat action, with wall proximity testing drivers’ nerve and the new active aero systems enabling closer following.

Piastri post-race: “Leading the championship feels unreal—back-to-back wins here in Jeddah is massive. The car was incredible, and managing the energy and tires was key. Huge thanks to the team; we’re in a great spot!” Verstappen added: “Frustrating with the penalty, but we fought back hard. Piastri drove well—congrats to him. On to Miami!”
McLaren’s momentum builds as the season heads to the Americas, with Piastri now the man to beat. The championship is wide open, promising more thrills ahead!
