Asian Youth Boxing Championship: Big medal haul for India
With an incredible 43 medals won in boxing at the ASBC Asian U-22 and Youth Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, the Indian team concluded an exciting voyage.
12 gold, 14 silver, and 17 bronze medals in total from both categories are included in this.
The young section won 22 medals on Monday, including five gold, nine silver, and eight bronze, while the Indian U-22 squad completed with 21 medals yesterday, including seven gold, five silver, and nine bronze. Only the host nation, Kazakhstan, with 48 medals won, had more medals in the end than India.
The current junior world champion Nisha defeated Otynbay Bagzhan of Kazakhstan in the 52kg class to win 5-0 and take home the yellow metal. Later, Laxmi (50 kg) defeated Enkh Nomundari of Mongolia in the second round of the fight to earn India’s sixth gold medal by referee stop the contest (RSC).
In the meanwhile, nine young boxers who had lost in their individual finals—Sagar Jakhar (60 kg), Priyanshu (71 kg), Rahul Kundu (75 kg), Aryan (92 kg), Tamanna (54 kg), Nikita Chand (60 kg), Shrushti Sathe (63 kg), Rudrika (75 kg), and Khushi Pooniya (81 kg)—ended their careers with silver medals.
Brijesh Tamta, Aryan Hooda, Yashwardhan Singh, Laxmi, and Nisha, five young Indian boxers, won gold medals on Monday at the ASBC Asian U-22 & Youth Boxing Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan, thanks to their outstanding performances.
Brijesh won the men’s 48kg final, defeating Muminov Muinkhodzha of Tajikistan 5-0 to give India its first gold medal of the competition. Aryan (51 kg) kept up the trend, defeating Kamilov Zafarbek of Kyrgyzstan 5-0 in an equally commanding fashion.
Yashwardhan Singh (63.5kg) had to put in a lot of effort to defeat Tajikistan’s Gafurov Ruslan, despite both fighters displaying strong offensive intent. The Indian boxer won 4-1 in the end.
Alfiya Khan Pathan won a silver medal in the Asian U-22 Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan on Tuesday. In the final round of the light heavyweight (81kg) division, Alfiya lost 4-1 against local favourite Diana Magauyayeva.Former world junior champion Alfiya began the contest as the favourite. She beat Diana at the 2019 U-17 Asian Championship in Dubai.
The Indian delegation has won 43 medals at the prestigious tournament, which has been characterised by high-stakes action with over 390 boxers from over 24 countries, including powerful boxing nations like China, India, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan vying for medals across 25 weight categories. Of these, 22 medals are from the youth section and 21 from the U-22.
