Women’s Asia Cup 2022: Pakistan defeats India by 13 runs

On Friday, all-rounder Nida Dar helped Pakistan defeat India by 13 runs in a gripping Women’s Asia Cup encounter at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Bangladesh.

According to the PCB, this is Pakistan’s third victory in 13 T20 internationals versus the arch-rivals. Dar led the batting effort with a 37-ball 56 to help Pakistan reach 137 at the loss of 6 wickets. She then took two wickets for 23 runs, combining with Nashra Sandhu (three for 30) and Sadia Iqbal (two for 24) to remove a tough and in-form India for 124 in 19.4 overs, with 18 runs required off the last over.

The all-rounder hit five fours and a six, and she and Bismah Maroof put up 76 runs for the fourth wicket after Pakistan had fallen to 33 for three after deciding to play first.

Openers Muneeba Ali (17) and Sidra Amin (11) got things going well, racing to 26 for no loss in 4.2 overs before losing their wickets within the next two overs. Dar and Maroof, together with Aliya Riaz and Ayesha Naseem’s run-a-ball innings, enabled Pakistan reach 137 for six.

Nashra, Dar, and Sadia bowled effectively in protecting the target, limiting India to 124. The three bowlers not only bowled to their capabilities, but fielders also contributed by not allowing additional runs in the outfield.

Pakistan’s victory halted India’s six-year string of five straight T20I victories. The last time India lost against Pakistan was on March 19, 2016 in Delhi during the Women’s T20 World Cup. With 10 wins in 13 T20Is, India still has the upper hand over Pakistan.

India has two group stage matches remaining, against Bangladesh on Saturday and Thailand on Monday. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s remaining group matches will be against the UAE and Sri Lanka.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. On October 15, the final will be held at the same location.

Nida Dar, Player of the Match: “It was a slow start but I went there and talked to Bismah and she said look we have to make a partnership here. It was a good wicket for the batters but it was my role to play an innings like that. It was like I wanted to find my hitting areas. We need to work on our last three to four overs and need to finish well.”

Pakistan Captain, Bismah Maroof: “Very important game for us after yesterday. We executed the things very well. How Nida batted beautifully. We just wanted to take calculated risks. Nida played a crucial innings for us. In the middle we have gaps, and we know Nida cant hit so we look to hit the strength areas. We didn’t assess the conditions well yesterday. We read the conditions well today. We executed the plans very well today.”

India Captain, Harmanpreet Kaur: “In the middle, we were trying to give the chance to other batters, because you have to do that as the tournament goes on, but it backfired. It was a chaseable target. In the middle overs, we were not able to take singles and rotate strike, we played too many dot balls. Whoever is new in the side, they should good number of games heading into the game, because whenever you change the side the players coming in should be ready. We are aware of that and never take any team lightly. It is a part of the game. Yesterday, Thailand played a good game. Today, Pakistan played good cricket, and they came up trumps. Going forward, we need to work on those areas.”
