Lampard challenges Everton team to win next match with Manchester United

Frank Lampard has urged his Everton squad to demonstrate the significant advances made in both talent and mindset when they meet Manchester United on Sunday at Goodison Park.

The Blues are undefeated in seven games and have won back-to-back games against West Ham United and Southampton.

Lampard noted how a win over Erik ten Hag’s club would be another “positive signal” for his players and would enhance the squad’s developing confidence.

Everton showed grit and commitment in the previous encounter between the clubs in April, recording a crucial 1-0 victory in the Premier League run-in.

Lampard asked his squad to demonstrate their progress since last season by stamping their dominance on the game on Sunday.

“We had to dig in and battle against clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea to beat them last season – but can we approach games like Sunday’s with a different attitude and think about us and what we can do to compete with teams at this level,” he stated in his pre-match news conference.

“I believe we’ve entered a new period.  We’ll have a strong opportunity in this game if we can improve our performance. It’s critical for us to focus on ourselves while we’re on a good run. If we keep doing things properly, we should be able to cause difficulties for a lot of teams. We shall be confident in our abilities. Winning the game in the near term would be a great signal, not so much to the outside world as to ourselves,” he added.

Manchester United is a superb squad with excellent individual players. They have one of the Premier League’s strongest squads.

“We are conscious of it, but we also have faith in ourselves and an awareness of what we are capable of, particularly at Goodison. I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic environment.  We must do our share.”

Lampard feels Everton’s hard work on the training ground and excellent summer transfer window have contributed to the club’s improved performances and “positive vibe.”  And he is confident that his squad can improve even more.

“It was about making sure we brought in the proper individuals in terms of recruiting, but also about working on the training ground to improve,” he stated.

“Last season, we found ourselves in a difficult situation and had to fight our way out of a relegation battle. Now that we’ve had some time to work with more confidence, less stress, and in a positive direction, the players have bought into it. It’s still early. We’ve already had two victories, and we want many more. People can tell that we’re heading in the right path and becoming better. There will be more,” he said.

Everton have the greatest defensive record in the Premier League, having surrendered only seven goals in the league thus far this season.

“I’m overjoyed because it’s a basis that can help you win games,” Lampard continued.

“I’m also thrilled for the boys because it’s a really wonderful metric to have when you work as a team.  We definitely have a tremendous spirit and organisation.” And we work hard on the training pitch to build a strong foundation. However, the Premier League is merciless, and if we lower our standards, those wonderful things may change.   We must be proud of that defensive record and want to improve even more, because we can surely improve defensively.”
