Dead Space Remake to release on January 27

The Dead Space reboot is coming in just a few weeks, and fresh information about how Montreal-based developer Motive Studio is improving the game is trickling in. While the new Dead Space keeps the original game’s bones, the script has been completely reworked. The devs previously stated that this was mostly to give the no longer-mute Isaac Clarke something to say, but it appears that the rewrite goes a little farther than that.

Dead Space was nearly highly appreciated when it was published in 2008, getting an 89 on Metacritic. Not only is it regarded as one of the finest games of the year, but it and its first sequel are largely regarded as among the best survival horror games ever created. That again, just because the game is a bonafide classic doesn’t mean it’s without flaws. It has flaws, just like every other game. For example, the 3D map in the game, like most 3D maps, was not properly developed or usable. Motive recognised this and modified it for the remake, making it a 2D map.

EA recently confirmed the news on the game’s official Twitter account. On next-generation consoles, in addition to the game’s quality setting, there will be a Performance Mode that runs the game in 2K (1440p) resolution at 60FPS without ray tracing. Although EA claims that these modes will be accessible on platforms, the resolution and framerate on the Xbox Series S are not mentioned. It will be fascinating to see what resolution and framerate the game will operate at on Microsoft’s entry-level next-gen console in each setting.

Horror games are designed to frighten its players, but the pause button allows them to take a small break from the danger and regain their composure. Joel MacMillan, Realization Director at EA Motive, told Inverse that eliminating the pause option will assist to make a “much more profound” experience:

“In horror games, you can pause and you have a moment of safety there. You can take a breath. And I think you get a reprieve from that. It deflates some of the tension. But with persistent online games, you’re playing with dozens of other people, and you can’t just pause everybody’s game. I think removing that as a feature would make horror games far more impactful — You would truly feel like you’re never actually safe,” said MacMillan

Dead Space already keeps players on the edge of their chairs due to the fact that the action around them never stops when they visit stores or check maps, objectives, and inventories, leaving them susceptible to assault. Those who want an even more “terrifying, on-the-edge-of-your-seat, anxiety-ridden sensation” can still refuse to use the stop button, and the option is still available for those who require it.

On January 27, the Dead Space remake will be released on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.
