Tetris Effect: Connected – The best iteration of Tetris ever
Tetris Effect was a stunner when it first appeared on the first PlayStation VR in 2018. Tetris Effect grew into what would possibly be the finest Tetris game ever, bolstered by the Connected upgrade, which brought online co-operative multiplayer and a number of traditional competitive modes later in 2021. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that Tetris Effect: Connected on PSVR2 takes an already fantastic game and improves it even more by utilising the cutting-edge capabilities provided by Sony’s latest piece of VR technology.

The experience is generally comparable to the previous PSVR generation, although the visual quality is noticeably better. Because of the PSVR2’s improved resolution and HDR support, the game appears much sharper. The game has always been beautiful, but the new headgear enhances the virtual reality visuals – particles swirling around you, gems hanging down from either side, dolphins springing out of the sea, suddenly teleporting to the moon. It’s fantastic.

Tetris is nearly woven into the fabric of the game world. It’s possibly the most recognisable puzzle game ever created, and even non-gamers understand the concept of the game despite never having played it. Blocks fall from the top of the screen, and you must slot them into the precise positions to create a line that spans the entire screen. This clears the line, and play may resume. A “Tetris” is created by stacking four of them and clearing them with one long piece, resulting in a massive quantity of points.
A clever new feature makes use of the PSVR2’s eye-tracking; close your eyes for approximately a second, then open them again to enter the game’s Zone state. You can still enable it by pressing a button, but it’s quite great that you can utilise a basic motion like this for gaming purposes.

Speaking of the Zone, Tetris Effect: Connected makes good use of the PSVR2’s eye-tracking features as well. Blinking for a second or more puts you into the Zone and slows time down, allowing you to pull off some cool T-spins and other manoeuvres on your way to a Perfectris 18 line clear.

If you haven’t played Tetris Effect before and have a shiny new PSVR2, this is your chance to rectify that oversight. It deftly maintains the generational appeal of Tetris while skillfully and thoughtfully enhancing it with multiplayer functionality, modes for every mood, and an unmatched audiovisual appearance that is quite unlike anything else on the shelves. Similarly, if you’ve been playing it on both PS4 and the previous generation of PSVR, your save will be carried over to this new version of the game. Aside from that, this is the same great Tetris spin we’ve all come to know and love. Fantastic music is combined with vivid, beautiful graphics to elevate this nearly 40-year-old game to new heights.
