England Complete 3-0 Whitewash with 142-Run Thrashing of New Zealand

England sealed a crushing 3-0 series whitewash over New Zealand with a merciless 142-run victory in the 3rd and final ODI at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on January 13, 2026. Batting first after Jos Buttler won the toss, England exploded to a mammoth 422 for 6Phil Salt’s blistering 182 off 112 balls (18 fours, 10 sixes) and Harry Brook’s 124 off 78 (12 fours, 6 sixes) adding 212 in just 22 overs for the third wicket. New Zealand, in reply, were bundled out for 280 in 44.2 overs despite Rachin Ravindra’s fighting 102Jofra Archer claiming 4 for 52 and Adil Rashid 3 for 61. The victory is England’s biggest ever (by runs) against New Zealand in ODIs and their first clean sweep in a bilateral series Down Under since 2018.

Hagley Oval’s pristine batting paradise — short square boundaries, lightning outfield, and a pitch flatter than a motorway — produced the highest aggregate (702 runs) in an England-New Zealand ODI. Buttler’s decision to bat first was vindicated within the first 20 overs as Salt and Brook tore the bowling apart. For Tom Latham, the whitewash is a bitter pill — his side’s bowling economy of 9.54 the worst ever conceded by New Zealand in a home ODI.

England – 422-6 (50 overs) Salt and Duckett raced to 88-0 in 10 overs. Duckett fell for 42, Root for 28, but Salt and Brook detonated:

  • Salt’s 182 (112 balls) — fastest 150 by an Englishman in ODIs
  • Brook’s 124 (78 balls) — fastest ODI ton by an Englishman vs NZ
  • 212-run 3rd-wicket stand in 132 balls Livingstone (38 off 18) and Buttler (42 off 22) added 82 in the last five overs. Ferguson 2-92, Henry 2-98 — rest went for plenty.

New Zealand – 280 all out (44.2 overs) Ravindra gave hope with a classy 102 off 98 (11×4, 2×6), adding 112 with Conway (58). But once Conway fell to Rashid, the middle order folded:

  • Latham 8, Mitchell 12, Phillips 22
  • Archer’s death burst — 4-52 including Ferguson and O’Rourke in successive balls Rashid finished with 3-61, Curran 2-48.
