Electronic Arts and Marvel Entertainment to jointly develop games for PC and consoles

With the introduction of their multi-title agreement, Electronic Arts and Marvel Entertainment are moving into gaming together.

Marvel Entertainment, LLC, a wholly-owned division of The Walt Disney Company, is one of the world’s most notable character-based entertainment organisations, with a proven library of over 8,000 characters used in various media for more than eighty years. Marvel character franchises are used in entertainment, licencing, publishing, gaming, and digital media.

Electronic Arts is a world leader in digital interactive entertainment. The company creates and distributes games, entertainment, and online services for Internet-connected consoles, mobile devices, and PCs.

EA generated nearly $7 billion in net sales in fiscal year 2022. EA is known for its portfolio of highly acclaimed, high-quality franchises such as EA SPORTS FIFA, Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, Madden NFL, Need for SpeedTM, Titanfall, Plants vs. Zombies, and F1.

The new long-term project will create at least three action-adventure games for consoles and PC. Each new game will have its own plot set in the Marvel world. The first title on the list is an Iron Man game by Motive Studios. Although the title has not yet been revealed, the game will have a single-player, third-person scenario that examines Tony Stark’s, a.k.a. Iron Man’s, whole life.

“We have been long-time fans of Marvel and their impressive leadership, so this is a remarkable moment for our developers as well as our players and fans,” said Laura Miele, COO at EA.

“We look forward to welcoming Marvel into the EA family of creators and know this collaboration will produce exceptional experiences for our players. We can’t wait to see players’ reactions when they suit up as Iron Man and do the extraordinary things this Super Hero is known for.”

Respawn Entertainment, one of EA’s most known studios, is presently working on a variety of new projects, including two Star Wars titles. This most likely indicates that the company will not be engaged with Marvel IP; but, if the arrangement extends beyond three games, Respawn may have a chance in the future.

“At Marvel, we strive to find best-in-class teams who can take our characters on heroic journeys in ways they haven’t before, and collaborating with Electronic Arts will help us achieve that,” said Jay Ong, Executive Vice President at Marvel Games. “We pride ourselves on being enthusiastic, creative collaborators with developers so they have the freedom to create something deeply unique and truly remarkable. The team at Motive is getting started on that with their Iron Man video game and we can’t wait for players to learn more in the far future.”

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has far outperformed any other movie brand in the world, Marvel hasn’t had the most successful gaming record. While there have been games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, a substantial percentage of Marvel’s IP in games has yet to gain a footing in the games business.

Recently, Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers failed to satisfy fan expectations and performed poorly economically. EA is one of the largest publishers and has a variety of amazing companies working on Marvel IP under its umbrella. While EA hasn’t been especially flawless in its management of popular IPs, the sheer degree of production value at its disposal cannot be overlooked.

EA’s Marvel library will be added to its existing and growing collection of Star Wars titles released in the 2010s. It remains to be seen how Marvel will expand its gaming products, but it is evident that the comic book universe will be a major component in the future years. Since the agreement calls for EA to create at least three games, more may follow if the initial batch is successful.
