Indian esports teams to compete in Hangzhou Asian Games
This week, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports added eSports to their multi-sport events. This is a big step forward for the field, which has been looking for a boost for a long time.
Long thought to be in the same category as iGaming, which includes fantasy sports, teen patti, rummy, poker, gambling, and betting the new amendment lets people involved in eSports dream big, claim it as a real sport, and try to get the same perks that other sports do.

Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, amended the regulations governing eSports in accordance with the authority “conferred by clause (3) of article 77 of the Constitution” and requested that “e-Sports be included as part of multi-sports events” from the Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology and Sports.

The mistaken link with iGaming and the seeming absence of physical exercise both contribute to the delay in classifying eSports as a “sport.” However, some involved in eSports refer to its competitors as “athletes,” describing it as a sport on par with shooting or chess. In addition to eSports’ acceptance as a sport in other areas of the world, its inclusion as a demo event in the 2018 Asian Games has given it more credence.
However, the President’s announcement on December 23 that the IT Ministry would be the focal point for issues relating to online gaming and that the Sports Ministry would be required to integrate it in its curricula has given Esports fans a boost.

This is a significant step forward in encouraging the growth and inclusion of virtual sports in the Olympic movement and in further interacting with competitive gamers.

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), one of the more well-known games, had over 100 million registered users until it was banned this year, which was a significant loss for the business. However, it ended up being the only significant hiccup in a year that was generally encouraging for eSports in India.

The Indian DOTA 2 squad defeated New Zealand to win bronze in the first Commonwealth Esports Championship in Birmingham in August.
The event will debut at the Asian Games, which will take place in Hangzhou, China, in 2019.
Lokesh Suji, director of the Indian Esports Federation and vice-president of the Asian Esports Federation, reacted to the news of its admission as a mainstream sport by saying the community’s efforts have finally paid off.
“We have been constantly working on establishing the difference between esports and iGaming, and finally, our efforts have been fulfilled. We welcome this announcement by our government, which will open new avenues to pour in more investment opportunities in this booming industry.

“From now onwards, we will have to build proper infrastructure, training facilities and coaching for our young esports athletes. Only a short time until we see esports being placed in the same league as cricket, football, basketball, etc. and having similar fan power, scale and craze,” explained Mr. Suji.

As the national sports federation, the ESFI has been vying for recognition. In order to promote investors, particularly international ones, and acquire infrastructure, such as monitors, workstations, accessories, etc., they want to concentrate on coaching, skill development, and medals. “We have seen how players stumble when they play international teams. Coaching and skill development includes mental health—they should not lose confidence against better-known opponents,” says Suji.

India is still far behind some of the other, eSports-friendlier countries in this regard. However, with its youthful population, the expansion of mobile and broadband services, and overall preference for all things digital, eSports may very well turn into a medal-producing source.
