The Witcher 3 Complete Edition to release on January 26

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the holy is constantly at odds with the impure, and beauty is always at odds with blood. The series has always juxtaposed its world’s physical splendour with its inherent brutality, but never has that contrast been this unsettling, this kinetic. It’s no surprise that The Witcher 3 displays the immediate violence of battle in exquisite detail; many games fill the screen with chopped heads and grisly innards. The way this fantastic journey depicts the emotional tragedies and devious chances that such fights give is what makes it so remarkable.

The incredibly successful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s next-generation update was awaited with the zeal of a new game. The game was released seven years ago to widespread critical acclaim, earning over 200 Game of the Year awards, selling over forty million copies, and making the list of “The Best Games Of All Time.”

This version of Wild Hunt includes several features that console gamers have long desired and PC players have previously had access to. Console players can now enjoy a consistent 60fps framerate (or a “quality mode” designed to target 4K 30FPS), tonnes of bugfixes, and several quality-of-life advancements, thanks to a few fan-made adjustments to enhance visual quality.

The Witcher 3 has a massive scope, but “large” is only a word, not a judgement of good or bad. It’s a good thing, therefore, that The Witcher 3 doesn’t follow the “build a vast world and load it with copy-paste material” design philosophy. Instead, it strikes a near-perfect balance between providing activities and allowing its areas to breathe. You take a route not just because it has a question mark on it, but also because it must go somewhere fresh and fascinating.

Every mission is a narrative of tragedy or success ready to engulf you, urging you to make decisions that impact the environment in many ways. You won’t always know what the implications are; some actions have obvious, game-changing ramifications, while others barely grab your attention. But the effects are there, and you see them frequently, even if the game doesn’t make an effort to highlight them.

The Witcher 3 improvements are not only technical. The game now has a photo option for capturing candid shots of Geralt in mid-swing, as well as some environmental changes and added bits and pieces that connect the game into the Netflix show in a non-gimmicky way. There are also UI enhancements, additional camera control via a new mode, and a modest update to loot herbs faster, which really makes alchemy considerably less of a bother.

The Complete Edition of Wild Hunt is now the default choice for a new or returning gameplay session, and it’s been simply wonderful to feel and play it again.
