“It was really disappointing,” Usman Khawaja explains heated argument with MCC Member

The fifth day of the second Ashes Test match at Lord’s was filled with drama, with Australia taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match Test series. The occurrence that occurred in the Lord’s large chamber drew everyone’s attention. After lunch, the Pat Cummins-led team was ascending the stairs to their dressing rooms when two Australian players were insulted by MCC members. Two security officers stepped forward and drew Usman Khawaja back. Usman Khawaja was one of the two players who were assaulted, thus the MCC released a statement apologising for the event.

Usman Khawaja, Australia’s opener, has described what transpired in the Lord’s pavilion at lunch on the last day of the second Ashes Test that caused him to lose his cool. On a tense final day, the event occurred following the completion of the first session. The day began in a difficult fashion with Jonny Bairstow’s dramatic exit after only 10 runs. England had already lost Ben Duckett, and before they could right the ship, Bairstow left in dramatic fashion.

Following Bairstow’s contentious dismissal, the mood at Lord’s was tight. After avoiding a short delivery in Cameron Green’s over, he moved out of the crease, but Alex Carey instantly smashed the stumps with the ball. Baistow’s dismissal was first referred to as a “run-out,” but was then altered to “stumped,” emphasising that it was perfectly legal. Following his removal, the English audience booed the Australian squad and referred to them as cheats.

The England supporters were furious at the change of events, and many chose to express their rage on the Australian players. As the players made their way to the changing room, a few Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members seated in the Long Room were spotted speaking to them. Usman Khawaja and David Warner were spotted having an impassioned conversation with the members in response.

“It was really disappointing. Lord’s is one of my favorite places to come. There’s always respect shown at Lord’s, particularly in the Members Pavilion in the Long Room, but there wasn’t today. It was very disappointing. If anyone asked me where the best place is to play I always say Lord’s,” Khawaja explained.

“The crowd is great, particularly the members are great, and some of the stuff that was coming out of the members’ mouths is really disappointing and I wasn’t just going stand by and cop it. So I just talked to a few of them. A few of them throwing out some pretty big allegations and I just called them up on it and they kept going, and I was like, well, this is your membership here. So I’m just pointing them out. But it’s pretty disrespectful, to be honest. I just expect a lot better from the members,” he added.

It happened when the squad went back to the dressing room for lunch after the first session, and an MCC member made a joke about Jonny Bairstow’s contentious dismissal, which sparked a furious fight. The MCC member also attempted to stop David Warner, but a security officer intervened to cease the verbal brawl. Following the completion of the game, the MCC published a statement in which they detailed the entire incident, while Khawaja also talked about the event and spoke to Channel Nine after the game.

Cricket Australia published a statement after the recordings of the incident went popular on social media, and the team management also requested an inquiry. With a 2-0 advantage, Australia will go to Leeds for the third Test. Because of the scandal, Pat Cummins’ team should expect angry spectators throughout the series.
