Onana makes a strong World Cup debut helps Belgium defeat Canada 1-0
Amadou Onana made a strong World Cup debut, coming off the bench to help Belgium defeat Canada 1-0 in the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.
At halftime, Onana replaced Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans, with the Red Devils ahead thanks to Michy Batshuayi’s 44th-minute goal.
The 21-year-old midfielder was controversially penalised 11 minutes into the second stanza for fouling Stephen Eustáquio while protecting possession from the Canada player.
But, with Axel Witsel, Onana was important in the centre of midfield as Belgium clawed their way through a quality Canada squad to pick up three points in their first match.
It was Onana’s third senior cap for Belgium, following two performances in UEFA Nations League matches earlier this year.
Belgium’s next match is against Morocco on November 27th, followed by a match against Croatia four days later.
