The victory highlights Australia’s women’s cricket supremacy, since they are also global champions in the 20-over and 50-over categories. Australia appeared to be on track for a higher total after racing to 83-1 off 10 overs. Australia made 161-8 in 20 overs in the bright Birmingham weather, led by opener Beth Mooney’s 61.

Captain Meg Lanning, on the other hand, was removed for 36 by spinner Radha Yadav. Tahlia McGrath was the next to go, and she was superbly collected by Yadav at backward point. Australia were unable to build the momentum they desired, losing wickets at frequent intervals in the face of an excellent fielding performance by India. Mooney was out in the 18th over after being caught by Deepti Sharma, who clutched to the ball one-handed as she backtracked. India limited Australia to 36 runs in the final five overs, capturing five wickets.

India seemed to be on track for a stunning victory when they were 118-2 in the 15th over, but a flurry of wickets stalled their assault. India appeared to be the favourites, especially after a 96-run partnership between skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues stole the game away from Australia. However, India had a catastrophic collapse, losing eight wickets for 34 runs as the middle and lower middle-order disintegrated under pressure. Gardner took three wickets as India was knocked out for 152 in 19.3 overs. India needed 11 runs off the last over to win. They still found boundaries to stay in the game, reaching the last over two wickets in hand. However, Meghna Singh was run out off the second ball, and Yastika Bhatia was lbw the next ball.
Earlier on Sunday, New Zealand defeated England by an eight-wicket margin in the bronze medal match.
