ISL Preview & Prediction: Mumbai City FC vs Hyderabad FC

India’s premier football league, the Hero Indian Super League (ISL), began play on October 12, 2014. ATK FC won the league’s first season, and Chennaiyin FC took first place in the second. ATK FC reclaimed the championship in the third season of the Hero ISL, their second victory in three years, while Chennaiyin did so in the fourth. In the 2018–19 season, Bengaluru FC took home the championship. ATK FC made a successful comeback in the 2019–20 season and added a third trophy to their collection. Mumbai City FC triumphed in the 2020–21 season, which also included SC East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan.

The Indian Super League 2022-2023 starts on 7th October with Kerala Blasters FC facing East Bengal FC at Kochi. An explosive match to look out for is the Mumbai City FC vs Hyderabad FC where both the top teams will face off on Sunday at the G.M.C Balayogi Athletic Stadium.

The stadium is Hyderabad FC’s home field. We can expect  tremendous support for the home team. This match on 9th October between the two teams is going to be an excitingly tight nail biter. Both teams have the perfect lineup and star players who are in form.

Mumbai City FC Players to look out for:

  • Mourtada Fall- Defender [Highest goal scoring defender in ISL History]- Sergio Lobera brought in Mourtada Fall, a centre-back to repair FC Goa’s porous defence ahead of the 2018-19 season, and he didn’t disappoint. Mourtada Fall, who had previously played under Lobera at Moghreb Tetouan, adjusted quickly to the system. The Senegalese was the unquestioned standout of the Gaurs’ backline, propelling them to the Hero ISL final in 2018-19. In his second season with FC Goa, he helped the club reach the top of the Hero ISL standings. His 5 goals were the most by any defender in the Hero ISL 2019-20 season. He joined Lobera at Mumbai City FC ahead of the Hero ISL 2020-21 season and appeared in 22 games for the Islanders during their title-winning season.
  • Ahmed Jahouh [Midfielder]- Ahmed Jahouh first performed for Ittihad Khemisset before going on to Moghreb Tetouan. Jahouh won two league titles and competed in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup during his five seasons with the club. The Moroccan midfielder joined the Gaurs at the start of the 2017-18 season and quickly established himself as one of the league’s finest, leading the passing and tackling records in his first two seasons in India. After signing a new contract with FC Goa prior to the start of the 2019-20 season, he led the club from the centre of the field and scored his maiden Hero ISL goal. He joined Mumbai City FC ahead of the 2020-21 Hero ISL season and was a key player of the team that won the title. With five assists, he did his job well.
  • Phurba Lachenpa [Goalkeeper]- Phurba Lachenpa, a product of the Shillong Lajong FC Academy, signed a professional deal with the Meghalaya-based club in 2015. The Sikkimese goalkeeper made 24 appearances for the team over four seasons before joining another Hero I-League club, Real Kashmir FC, in 2019. Lachenpa was a frequent starter in Real Kashmir FC’s fourth-place finish in the 2019-20 season, keeping eight clean sheets in 19 games across all competitions while surrendering only 17 goals. Lachenpa played for Mumbai City FC in the 2020-21 Hero ISL, making his debut in the Islanders’ second-leg quarterfinal versus FC Goa. In the penalty shootout, Lachenpa replaced Amrinder Singh and helped his club reach the final, where they defeated ATK Mohun Bagan.

Hyderabad FC Players to look out for:

  • Bartholomew Ogbeche [Forward]- Bartholomew Ogbeche was born in Nigeria and went to France to join the Paris Saint-Germain junior squads. At the age of 17, he made his first-team debut. He briefly played for SC Bastia and FC Metz before departing for the Middle East to join Al-Jazira. He has also played for clubs in Spain, Greece, England, and the Netherlands. Ogbeche joined NorthEast United FC before to the 2018-19 Hero ISL season and instantly demonstrated his goal-scoring ability, finishing his first season in India with 12 goals. In the Hero ISL 2019-20 season, the ace striker scored 15 goals and one assist to his record with Kerala Blasters FC. After joining Mumbai City FC ahead of the 2020-21 season, Ogbeche scored many vital goals and helped the team win their first Hero ISL crown. In July 2021, he joined Manuel Marquez’s Hyderabad FC, who had just lost out on the 2020-21 season’s semifinals.
  • Akash Mishra [Defender]- Akash Mishra spent 3 years of training in Germany after passing the U Dream Football Academy auditions in 2015. He returned to India in 2018 and quickly made the India U-18 team. Before joining Indian Arrows, he scored twice in seven games to assist the squad win the SAFF Championships in 2019. Having spent a season playing in the Hero I-League, Akash signed Hyderabad FC ahead of the 2020-21 season and cemented himself as one of the top players in the division, dominating every minute of game for his club. Later that year, he made his national squad debut against Oman in Dubai.

3 September 2022: Army Red defeated ISL champions Hyderabad FC 1-0. Hyderabad FC concluded the match with Army Red FC, with nine shots on goal to the Red’s three, while the latter enjoyed the majority of possession (59%).

30 August 2022: Hyderabad FC won the game blowing away Neroca FC 3-0 at the Orange Brigade’s home turf-the Khuman Lampak Stadium, in Imphal. Nigerian striker Bart Ogbeche’s ability in front of goal is something that Indian football has rarely seen on a regular basis. For the past several years, his sense of presence, timing, and strength inside the box, as well as the brilliance of his finishing, have given Indian defenders nightmares. Even in this match he had a hand in all three goals, scoring two of them himself.

26 August 2022: Akash Mishra was sending crosses in from the left side to make it hard for the CFC defence to keep up. One such cross found Javier Siverio whose header was cleared of the line by Fallou Diagne. But it was thought that it was done with the hand, so the Senegalese were told to leave. Joao Victor, the captain of HFC, scored from the resulting penalty kick to tie things up. In the 64th minute, the unstoppable Bart Ogbeche gave HFC the lead. Mohammed Yasir took a free kick from the right side, and it went straight to Ogbeche, who was alone in the box. With a strong header, Ogbeche gave his team the lead. With only 10 players, it was hard for the CFC to stop the HFC’s attacks, which led to the third goal. The right cross of Nim Dorjee fell in “no man’s land,” and Lalchungnunga Chhangte picked it up. His cross was right on target for Ogbeche, who headed it into the goal for the second time in the game.

22 August 2022: Two long-range goals helped HFC win easily. Halicharan Narzary and Borja Gonzalez both scored in each half. Narzary’s goal was a right-footed curler, while Gonzalez’s was a left-footed banger.

3 September 2022: East Bengal got the better of Mumbai City FC with final scores of 4-3. For East Bengal FC, Sumit Passi scored twice in the 17th and 34th minutes, and Cleiton Silva scored twice in the 22nd and 81st. For Mumbai City FC, Lallianzuala Chhangte scored twice in the 36th and 43rd minutes. Greg Stewart scored their third goal in the 27th minute. Six of the seven goals were scored in the first half, which was very exciting.

29 August 2022: Mumbai City FC beat Rajasthan United FC 5–1 to get into the Durand Cup quarterfinals on winning this match. Greg Stewart, Lalllinzuala Chhangte, Mehtab Singh, Ahmed Jahouh, and Vikram Pratap Singh scored for the Islanders, while Gyamar Nikum scored for Rajasthan.

24 August 2022: A late equaliser by Jorge Pereyra Diaz prevented ATK Mohun Bagan their first win in the Durand Cup 2022, as the match concluded 1-1 at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. Jorge Pereyra Diaz heads the ball into the net after receiving it from a Sanjiv Stalin overhead pass in the strike zone.

18 August 2022: Adersh struck a stunner from the edge of the penalty area to give Indian Navy an unexpected first-half lead. Indian Navy had a solid defence, but Mumbai City FC’s superiority ultimately allowed them to be broken many times in the second half. Mumbai City’s goals were smashed by Vikram Pratap Singh (45′), Greg Stewart (65′), Chhangte (89′, 90+1′).
