Prodigious Babar crowned ODI player of the year for second consecutive year

On Thursday, Pakistan captain Babar Azam was chosen for both the ODI Cricketer of the Year and the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of 2022.

Pakistan’s Babar Azam scored 679 runs at an average of 84.87 from nine matches, with three centuries.

This is Azam’s second year receiving the honour, which honours his remarkable performance and match-winning talents.

The ICC noticed that Azam scored 679 runs in nine One-Day Internationals in the previous year, with an average of 84.87 and three century and five half-centuries to his name.

Azam also retained his status as the top-ranked hitter on the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings, a position he has held since July 2021.

The ICC also commended Azam’s leadership as Pakistan’s captain, saying he led his side to only one loss all year, against Australia in Lahore.

Azam was recognised as “really an ODI great” by cricket statistician Mazher Arshad, while the ICC cited his 114-run knock against Australia in Lahore as his most spectacular performance of the year.

Pakistan’s sole loss in 50-over cricket last year came against Australia in Lahore, and based on the statistics, Babar was an easy pick for the ODI Player of the Year award.

It was also a fantastic year for Babar as captain in white-ball forms, with Pakistan winning all three ODI series and losing only one match out of nine to Australia.

Babar was the only player across all forms to surpass the 2000-run barrier throughout the calendar year, and he did so in style, accumulating a mammoth 2598 runs at an intimidating average of 54.12.

The powerful right-collection hander’s of eight hundreds and 17 fifties throughout the calendar year was his greatest of his career to date, and there’s no denying he’s at the highest level of his ability right now.
