According to Australian media sources, Saudi Arabia is aiming to create the world’s most profitable Twenty20 cricket league. The Saudi government and owners of Indian Premier League (IPL) clubs have commenced high-level talks. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is now the most-watched cricket league in the world, and Saudi Arabia intends to enter the market and establish the Kingdom as a global cricketing attraction.

Football is another sport being pursued in Saudi Arabia, both through foreign ownership of English Premier League club Newcastle United and the growth of the indigenous league, as seen by Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing. Cricket is projected to be the next area of investment.

Despite high-profile debuts in the UAE and South Africa drawing top players, the IPL remains the leading league for cricket fans. The IPL season runs from March to April, and the high heat is likely to make a major league scheduled in Saudi Arabia during the summer months impossible. This leaves October and November as the most possible months for a T20 cricket event in the Kingdom, if it makes it through the planning stage.
Saudi Arabia’s cricket board chairman, Prince Saud bin Mishal al-Saud, stated that he wants to make the kingdom a ” worldwide cricketing destination,” adding, “There will be leagues on all levels, not just one league.” He told Arab News reporters, “We’ve developed great relationships with the ICC and the Asian Cricket Council, as well as some successful international cricket boards and big cricketers globally.”
