SAFF Championship: Pakistan get hammered by Kuwait to loose 4-0

Shehzad Anwar’s men lost to Kuwait at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, three days after losing to India in their SAFF Championship opener – a game Pakistan played only six hours after landing in Bangalore.

Pakistan’s prospects of progressing from Group ‘A’ were all but over after India defeated Nepal 2-0 in the day’s other encounter.

“Our team definitely needs more experience,” Pakistan temporary assistant coach Torben Witajewski told reporters after the game.

“We need more matches as a team,” remarked the German, noting that Pakistan’s roster includes some foreign-based players.

Kuwait, one of two invited teams, began the event with a 3-1 victory against Nepal, and they joined India in the semi-finals following an entirely overwhelming performance against Pakistan.

Pakistan conceded the first goal in the 10th minute, like they did in their previous encounter, with Hasan Alanezi converting a cross from Mobarak Alfaneeni.

Kuwait extended their advantage seven minutes later via Alfaneeni. Ali Matar took control and sent a lovely through-ball to Alfaneeni, whose shot beat custodian Yousuf Butt and settled into the top corner.

Pakistan’s midfield was once again found wanting, with Rahis Nabi and Harun Hamid, both based in England, struggling to exercise any type of control, and it was only a matter of time until Kuwait scored their third.

This time, it was a mistake by Pakistan, as Alfaneeni was given the ball in first-half stoppage time and dinked the ball over Yousuf.

Kuwait added to Pakistan’s agony by scoring their fourth goal in the 69th minute, with Eid Alrashidi going on a solo run before reaching the back of the net.

Pakistan will now try to reclaim some respect when they play Nepal in their last group game on Tuesday, with both sides hoping to finish with a win.

But it will not be easy for the men in green, who have already lost seven consecutive games since the FIFA suspension was lifted in June last year.

Their first encounter after returning to international duty was a 1-0 loss to Nepal, and the Nepalese played well against India, holding the hosts scoreless in the first half until conceding two goals in the final nine minutes.

Sunil Chhetri, who scored a hat-trick against Pakistan, opened the scoring in the 61st minute, turning in a cut-back from Mahesh Singh.

In the 70th minute, Mahesh scored when Chhetri’s attempt was deflected into the crossbar and fell to him to secure the victory.
